Social service providers say the Kakaako encampment is believed to be the other major homeless site, in addition to the one on Kapalama Canal in Kalihi, where the majority of the homeless population are migrants from the three island states that fall under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) treaty with the U.S. #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii   #homelessness

KHON2 reached out to Street Grindz, the company that runs Eat the Street. They released the following statement: “We have no intention of displacing the homeless community or removing them permanently. Street Grindz is merely renting the park space from HCDA for one day each month.” #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii
HCDA wants more community activities like Eat the Street, sports and other family-friendly events to be held at the park during the day and …

"The Waiea, The Howard Hughes Corp.'s luxury residential high-rise on Ala Moana Boulevard, will feature one of the most unique exterior designs among the high-rises in Kakaako, reflecting the area in which it is being built." #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii
The exterior design of what is arguably the most luxurious tower rising in Kakaako is based on the legend of a Hawaiian father and son.

The redevelopment of Honolulu's growing neighborhood of Kakaako is something Hawaii Gov. David Ige wants to continue to see, although he noted that the focus should be more on building homes for local residents rather than outside investors.
Ige told PBN he also will try to ensure that the changes being made in Kakaako include a place for small business, both new and current small businesses that have been in the area for a long time.

"Right now, Kakaako development feels like a runaway train. Each week there are more permit approvals, cranes, and construction sites with little sense and a lot of fear about how it is all going to turn out. If that continues and Kakaako turns out badly, it will be for a lot of reasons. One of the most important and least understood is the limited imagination people in Hawaii have about urban life."

Instead of being used by the state as a deterrent for the homeless at Kakaako Gateway Park, Eat The Street has instead found a new ally in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which is giving them prime placement at the bottom of Ward Avenue. ‪#‎eatthestreet‬ ‪#‎kakaako‬ ‪#‎hawaii‬
The massively popular "Eat the Street" street food festival and its organizer Street Grindz has a new home in Kakaako, thanks to an agreement with The Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The festival had t...

"It’s a rarely available split-level condo, with 3,853 square feet of living area and another 225 square feet of lānai area. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms; two of the bedrooms are master bedrooms, since they are the same size and both have large, upgraded modern bathrooms with ... interesting showers." #kakaako   #hawaii

"Queen Street is reportedly owned by Kakaako Land Company and street signs warn drivers there is no parking. But there are also signs on some of streets that tell motorists they can park there for a price. One person said he pays $120 a month to park on this particular street." #kakaako   #honolulu   #hawaii
Council members will consider a proposal to form a group that would examine who has authority over streets.

"I know the developers of Kakaako would rather I walk, too. “Walkability” is a recurring theme in Kakaako publicity, speeches, websites and promo films." #kakaako   #hawaii
How you feel about the urbanization of Honolulu and Hawaii can depend on where you’re coming from. I’m coming from traffic. I’m looking ahead at more gridlock as I approach the IBM building at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Auahi Street in my battered Nissan. It makes me tense.  I’d much rather be walking. I know the developers of Kakaako would rather I walk, too. “Walkability” is a recurring theme in Kakaako publicity, speeches, websites ...
