Get PDF Compressor before the 1st of February, otherwise it'll cost you $29.95.
PDF Compressor is, as the name suggests, a program for making PDF files smaller without any noticeable loss of clarity. This is especially useful if the PDF file contains lots of images, such as one that's been generated from a scanner. But even if it's heavy on text, you'll still see a noticeable improvement.

Facebook plans to insert ads into videos that people have been viewing for at least 20 seconds. Up to now, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has forbidden the ads that you typically see before you can view a video, opting instead to now allow ads to appear while you are viewing the videos themselves.
Mark Zuckerberg has been building a video empire. Time to turn it into a business.

This weeks wallpaper is a long exposure photo of the night sky reflected in a mountain lake. The solid black mountains surround a small lake with a blue starry sky above. An orange glow over the mountains add a touch of warmth. This photo almost looks like a poster, with its sharp outlines and complementary colors, but some twinkling lights in seemingly far off valleys offset the effect. Icons do quite well with this background in most areas.

When you send a message to a contact over Facebook Messenger, it shows you whether or not said person is active. If said person is inactive, it shows you how long ago they were active. For everyone who has you added as a contact in Facebook Messenger, the very same information about you is available to them. If you find it too intrusive, you can turn it off. Here’s how.
Facebook had made its Messenger app a stand alone chat application. Its recent updates are pushing it more towards being a better replica of Snapchat but it remains so that even if you don’t …

This program which displays loads of figures and graphs about the state of your DSL internet connection. So whether you're having issues with speed or reliability that you want to troubleshoot, or whether you simply want to understand more about the DSL/ADSL standards, this will be of interest.
The program is called DSL Stats, and it's a 3 MB download from http://www.s446074245.websitehome.co.uk/index.html. It's malware-free according to VirusTotal and Web of Trust, and is portable. Just download, unzip, and run.
Welcome to 2017, and another year (hopefully!) of contributions from me. As you may have noticed, I took a couple of weeks away from the PC over Christmas, but I'm now back behind the keyboard again. In 2016 the stories I posted on this Hot Finds section achieved more than 2 million hits, so we're clearly doing something right.

If you use Google Chrome as your web browser, you may notice a message about a new Adobe Acrobat browser extension that your computer wants to install, and which seeks your permission to proceed.
The extension, at first glance, seems great. But, it only works if you have a paid-for copy of Acrobat installed, and, it also sends data back to Adobe about your usage of the program.

You might think you're tech-savvy enough to spot a fake email from a scammer pretending to be PayPal or eBay, but what about one coming from a familiar contact? And what if the message attached read just like something sent from a real person? That's exactly what a new email phishing scam is doing to unassuming Gmail users.
Gmail users are reporting a phishing scam that comes masquerading as one of your contacts.

Toggl is an online system for creating and tracking your timesheets. It's great if you work for a company that bills its clients based on how long you spend working for them. Even if you don't work in such an agency-like environment, or if you don't work at all, it's a great way to find out just what you do all day!

Just a couple of clicks each time you start and end a particular task, or type of task, will allow you to produce reports that show what you've been doing and which client should be paying for it.

If you are based in any European country, there's a web site that lets you update your settings with all of those ad networks from a single location. Just head to http://www.youronlinechoices.com/ and select your country to get started.
The site will contact all the ad networks in your country, show you whether you are currently set to receive behavioral ads from them, and then allow you to change the settings.
Remember the TV show about the place where everybody knows your name? On the internet, nowadays, it seems that everyone knows much more than merely your name. They know what web sites you like looking at, and what products you're interested in. And they use this information to present you with what's called behavioral advertising. Adverts which they think will appeal to you.
