Doing countless experiments on sputum wasn't exactly glamorous work, but it led Genentech scientist Steve Shak, M.D. to develop the first FDA-approved medicine for cystic fibrosis. Thanks to dogged determination, teamwork, and a company culture that encourages innovation, Shak took the medicine from idea to approval in just five years.
A new hire pursues an idea, from musty journals to clinical trials, eventually changing the way cystic fibrosis is treated.

“In some ways, getting diagnosed with lymphoma has made me stronger, braver and more resilient. In other ways, more cautious, risk averse and less patient. I’m a lawyer and a litigator. Surviving lymphoma has given me a different perspective on life and work. I try to focus on the important things.” – Tom is a Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) Western Regional Leadership Council member and an 11-year chronic lymphocytic leukemia survivor. In his free time he uses his professional skills as a lawyer to advocate for more research and funding for LRF.

For Blood Cancer Awareness Month we’re working with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Lymphoma Research Foundation to share the stories of people living with blood cancers.
