Top 50 Buzzwords in Japan 2014 http://gakuran.com/top-50-japanese-buzzwords-2014/
Continuing an annual tradition here on Gakuran.com, I’m back translating the Japanese buzzwords for 2014. Fresh new expressions and frequently used phrases from this year, providing a glimpse into the national psyche. The list is compiled every year by Jiyu Kokuminsha, publishing 50 nominees and then choosing the top 10 winning words in early December. …

Today is the Tokyo Marathon! I signed up on a bit of a whim, but after defying the 1/10 odds and being selected, I started training for the big day. I injured myself during a long run several weeks ago after doing 32km, and my knee is still not fully recovered. For that reason I’ll […]

It's that time of year again - Japanese buzzwords! http://gakuran.com/top-50-japanese-buzzwords-of-2013/
In what’s become something of an annual tradition here on Gakuran.com, I’m back again analysing the latest batch of new lingo and buzzwords from Japan. In addition to their annual compendium, the ‘Fundamentals of Modern Terminology’, Jiyu Kokuminsha publishes the list of buzzword nominees every year around this time and then chooses the winning words […]

You may have seen a recent guest post of mine on Tofugu highlighting the shipping service Tenso. It’s a special campaign for readers to grab a whole bunch of money to buy stuff from Japan, so if you’ve ever wanted to order something online from a Japanese store but lacked the means or the funds, […]

Today a Kickstarter email landed in my inbox entitled ‘Projects We Love: Stranger than Fiction’. As an enthusiast for the obscure, I eagerly clicked the link and was greeted with a book proposition concerning the topic of so-called ‘half cats’. Quite literally, half cats are real cats that are missing the rear half of their […]

New article! The Haikyo story that inspired 'Gone Home' http://gakuran.com/armchair-exploration-the-haikyo-story-that-inspired-gone-home
Around this time last year, a rather interesting article crossed my radar. It hadn’t been long since I’d moved to Tokyo to start a new job, and my internet scavenging was at an all time low. Thankfully however, I somehow came across the post on Kotaku talking about a curious computer game still in development […]

Brand new haikyo post - the first in over a year! http://gakuran.com/eccentric-mr-innards-golden-kingdom/
Hurrah! Autumn is here! The lands are awash in rich reds and heavenly golds and I, tired of the relentless greys of the city, am positively tingling to get out of Tokyo. Nothing compares to a warm fall day in Japan, except perhaps one spent in the company of a good friend in a spectacular …

The Evolution of the Racist Gaijin Party Mask http://gakuran.com/hi-im-a-foreigner-racist-party-mask/
Anyone who has lived in Japan for a reasonable amount of time (and many who have just visited) will have had the pleasure of visiting ‘Don Quixote’. A treasure-trove of sundry goods packed into a chain of multi-floored buildings splashed around the country. Quite central to one of the floor themes is costumes, ranging from […]

+Ken Yasumoto-Nicolson  Japan Probe wrote that post in 2010 after the Sora blogger brought the issue to the attention of the company. The product was changed in 2012, likely based on the feedback of foreigners. I didn't say Debito alone was the 'activist' that got the product changed, I linked him as one such example.

So it's still highly likely that complaints (i.e. 'activists') put pressure on the company to change the product, don't you agree? Unless you're taking issue with something else?

P.S. I also replied to your Reddit comment if you'd like to discuss the gaijinpot article :).

Ama - The Pearl Diving Mermaids of Japan

http://gakuran.com/ama-the-pearl-diving-mermaids-of-japan/
One of the lesser-known but fascinating parts of Japanese culture is that of the Ama pearl divers. Ama (海女 in Japanese), literally means ‘woman of the sea’ and is recorded as early as 750 in the oldest Japanese anthology of poetry, the Man’yoshu. These women specialised in freediving some 30 feet down into cold water […]

Gakuranman: A History Through the Pages http://gakuran.com/gakuranman-a-history-through-the-pages/
Gakuranman is ten years old today! Okay. Technically ‘Gakuranman‘ is much younger, since I only started writing under this alias a few years ago, but my first steps into the world of online web-logging really began on this very day ten full years ago! It’s little frightening if anything, and looking at my records it […]

There’s nothing new here that hasn’t been said before. But, sometimes, it serves us well to be reminded of adages which embiggen and embolden us. While perhaps not the most eloquent way of putting it, the phrase ‘Don’t Compare Your Inside to Someone Else’s Outside’ caught my attention browsing one Hacker News comment thread recently. […]
