We've made some changes to the way we do things in light of the recent events that some of you have commented on. If you're interested, read more...
Many of you have been asking questions about the recent rash of high-profile staff resignations, and we feel we owe you all both an explanation and an apology. First, the explanation: in short, it's become clear over recent months that freenode has lost its way somewhat, when compared to the ...

Mark your calendars, and don't forget to check your accounts!
On or around Friday, October 2nd, we shall be cleaning up the services database. This involves the bulk removal of expired nicks, channels and accounts. Therefore, please remember to identify to services when you connect ( /msg nickserv help identify ) and to use your grouped nicks whilst ...

[Global Notice] Earlier today the freenode infra team noticed an anomaly on a single IRC server. We have identified that this was indicative of the server being compromised by an unknown third party. We immediately started an investigation to map the extent of the problem and located similar issues with several other machines and have taken those offline. For now, we recommend that every change their NickServ password as a precaution. To do that, issue the command /msg NickServ set password YOURNEWPASSWORD (maximum length 79 characters), making sure / is the first character.

We'll issue more updates as WALLOPS and via social media!

Hi all, we've recently loaded a new extended ban that should make life easier in some circumstances. More details:
We have loaded a new module on the network which provides the $j extban type: $j: – matches users who are or are not banned from a specified channel. As an example… /mode #here +q $j:#timbuktu …would quiet users within #here that are banned in #timbuktu. Please note that 'banned' means ...

We would like to send our deepest condolences to the  entire FOSS community, especially Debian and Docker, following the death of Ian Murdock. We hope he is now at peace.
Dear friends and members of the open source community, It is with great sadness that we inform you that Ian Murdock passed away on Monday night. This is a tragic loss for his family, for the Docker…

We are again experiencing connectivity problems to some servers due to DDoS attacks. Please bear with us while we ride it out.

WALLOP tomaw: It's only a trial for now, but we've just enabled user-actionable sendpass so people can reset passwords for themselves. Hopefully it won't be abused, but if it is we'll need to switch it off again.
As a network, we feel it is hugely important to maintain close relationships with our many communities and users. Our interactions with users in #freenode and elsewhere on the network, fielding support requests and assisting users, help build and maintain these relationships.

[Global Notice] Hi all. As you've probably noticed we're having some connectivity issues across some of our servers today. Sadly this is again due to DDoS attacks. Please join us in a collective sigh.

+D. Martin Modern s2s protocols like TS6 make getting ops pretty much impossible, so I'll guess it's the latter.

Sorry about the noise, we've had to restart a bunch of servers due to an openssl security vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160). This is unfortunately going to be very noisy but should be over with relatively quickly. Thanks for using freenode and have a good day.

Please remember that updating openssl is necessary, but not sufficient action in this case.  Your keys have to be assumed compromised, and it's time to regen them.

An IRC network providing discussion facilities for the Free and Open Source Software communities, not-for-profit organizations, and related communities
Introduction
In 1998, the network had about 200 users and less than 20 channels. Fifteen years later, the network peaks at over 80,000 users. freenode provides facilities to a variety of groups and organizations. See our network policies and philosophy if you want to know more.

If you're interested in looking around the network, please come see us, or have a look at our blog.

freenode is run entirely by volunteers hailing from the wider FOSS communities which we serve. Our combined network staff and development base is made up of around 40 dedicated men and women. We can all be found in #freenode on the network. Staff are all voiced and happy to help, or just have a chat with you about what we do and why we do it!
