On Sunday, the crew competed at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia. The Varsity Eight continued its excellent fall season with a third place win. This week's Throwback Thursday is our only live ram mascot ever, Granite.
Granite was first acquired in fall 1945 and was named by a student poll as a reference to Fordham’s famous Seven Blocks of Granite. He would live out his days at Rose Hill in the campus Ram House, and although his time at FP was brief, he seems to have stuck around long enough to get himself (and his keeper) into the national papers.
One weekend, Granite was kidnapped and smuggled down to Washington, DC by a band of marauding Georgetown-ers who had mistaken the Prep’s mascot for the College’s. When the blunder was discovered and the amusing incident was picked up by the press, there were more than a few red-faced and very-apologetic Hoyas on Monday morning. Incidentally, the task of retrieving our beloved ungulate from Washington fell on the shoulders of the Keeper of the Ram, a unique faculty appointment to date. And who was the Prep’s official ram wrangler? None other than the late Fr. Jack Leonard, SJ, then just a young scholastic.
Granite II will be making his Fordham Prep debut at this Friday's Homecoming - meet him at 5pm in Mentor's Court!
