I'm sort of on the fence about it...
When I was in the military, we ran almost every morning immediately after waking up, and then I worked out in the afternoon... I ate whatever I wanted to, and was super fit...
I think that exercising early in the morning is a great way to jumpstart your metabolism, then in the evening, workout again to keep your body from going into storage mode... If you don't restrict your intake, your body won't freak out and go into 'hibernation mode'... 
But everyone's body is different... Find what work's best for you, and stick to it :D
