DIY Tip of the Day: Fix for a Rocking Washing Machine. If your washing machine is rattling the dishes in your cupboard, level the legs to stop the rocking. Adjust the machine leg levelers. But if rusted, cut 2 x 2-in. shims from a bike inner tube and stack them under the low corner to eliminate the rocking. Rubber is better than wood because it flexes just enough for the washing machine to find a balance point and stay put.

Good, common-sense tip with the rubber.

DIY Tip of the Day: Hand-Driven Belt Sander. Turn a 3 x 21-in. sanding belt into a jumbo sanding block. You need:
- Two pieces of 1/2-in. thick plywood,3-in. wide x 8-1/2 in. long
- Two dowels, 3 in. long x 1 in. dia.
Cut 40-degree angles on the ends of the plywood parts, slip them into the belt so their ends create a “V,” then slide a dowel between the angled ends. The wood parts will tighten up as you apply pressure when sanding.
