When I was younger I thought I had oily skin.🛢️😟
Especially through my teenage years and also my early twenties.

So what I did was I decided I needed to wash my face so many times a day, sometimes even four times a day!

In the morning, with soap and late morning, with soap. And then afternoon, with soap and evening, with soap.🤕

I just tried to get rid of all the oils. 🏜️

I thought if I get rid of all the oils on my face my skin would look better.
Then I noticed that that wasn’t quite working, so I started using oil-free products.
You know what happened?

My skin got so much oilier! And I started using a tissue to blot off all the excess oils throughout the day! 🙀🙀🙀

Finally, I realized that by stripping my skin of every bit of oil it was producing, I was causing it to overproduce to make up for the imbalance!

That was my lightbulb moment💡 - when I understood what my skin really needed. It needed these protective oils to look its best. Simple as that.

So what I recommend if you think you have oily skin or if see that you tend to have oil on your forehead, or on your nose and T-Zone is to try to be gentle. This means use LESS soap, and try not to wash your face with soap in the morning.

This may shock you, but try this and combine this simple adjustment and even change to a natural product that doesn’t say oil-free.🌿

And see what happens!

It may take a little time for your skin to adjust to this chance, but it will thank you.

Facial yoga works similarly to body exercises. It’s about toning the muscles to achieve a desired look. But one thing that is harder to identify, is when to begin 🤷 https://www.facebook.com/faceyogafumiko/videos/521111825002614/

So I found a little bit of time to myself while I was sitting in my car waiting for my daughter to finish her gymnastics class. It's a time just for myself and I love it!
I remember how I used to feel SO guilty if I wanted to take time for myself or do something for just me.

It's a strange feeling I felt after having my daughter, Nina I felt like I always had to do things for my family first. Then if I had EXTRA time, then I can use that time for myself. 👨‍👩‍👧

But as you know, if you're a mother, taking care of a little one you never actually find free time. There are always things to do. On top of that, I work from home, so that kind of makes it more challenging since there is no separation between work and my personal life unless I really, really put an effort in trying to separate them.
I struggled quite a lot with the feeling of guilt. 😣

🛫I still remember the first time I went traveling without my family. I had 4 days scheduled on business and then 6 days with my mother and sisters-in-law in Montana.

Even though I had the support of my family to go, I wasn’t allowing myself the luxury of accepting this (much needed) me time.

One of my sisters told me that "It's so important for a father to have special time with his daughter" and this really helped me see it as something for my daughter and husband too. I literally had to make the trip into something for my family instead of me to allow it to feel comfortable. I had to be giving something.
So I went. But you know what I did first?

I cooked! 👩‍🍳I made ten day’s worth of breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire time I was gone.I even made a schedule, a kind of menu, and I left instructions on how to prepare them all. I put everything, the name and the date, and I put in a container stored in the fridge and some of them in the freezer. I told my husband, "Okay this is a list, this is a menu, you'll be okay."

(In hindsight, what I was truly saying was “Ok, Fumiko, YOU are going to be ok. Your FAMILY is going to be ok.”) I was stressed out, and some people may think what I did was crazy, but I needed to do it for myself.

Something unexpected happened when I got back.

🛫I was a better person! I felt so rested and refreshed and this made me more patient and understanding at home. 👏🏻

I was more relaxed, I was nicer to my husband, I was nicer to my daughter, Nina.
I took a moment and thought to myself, wow, this is how a family should feel.
That experience changed me for the better, and I learned how vital self-care and me-time truly are. We have to fill our own cup before we can give from it.

For more on why I’m selfish and why you should be too, take some time for yourself and watch this video https://youtu.be/HJH0v82q9_M
