Michelson Diagnostics asked eg technology to undertake a detailed redesign of the product trolley and enclosure, including the assembly methodology of the functional elements of the VivoSight OCT system.

Working in partnership with Michelson, our first task was to understand how the product was being used and how it could be improved.

Detailed and methodical human factors research, drawing data from dermatologists currently using the system revealed that, while technical functionality was very important, the softer side of the user and patient experience could be dramatically improved.

Our design team used this information to create a range of aesthetic concepts for the enclosure to ensure that the mobility, storage and use of the new system accurately reflected the user requirements.

Several design options were developed until a final concept was approved and detailed to make it ready for manufacture. Michelson successfully launched the VivoSight Dx, targeting a wider range of clinical applications beyond dermatology.

Internships – good for them, good for us!

It’s that time of year again when we start the process of interviewing students who choose to have a “year in industry” as part of their degree course. Recently, we were asked if we benefit from internships, or whether it is a drain on resources to have someone with limited experience temporarily join the company. Our answer is that at eg technology, we believe that a great intern can make a great future appointment.

Over the last 15 years, we have had some exceptional interns who have not only contributed to the success of individual projects but also made a real, broader impact to the business. We look at it as “growing our own”, and we’ve made several very strong appointments from students who have spent a placement year with us and then returned as permanent employees upon completing their degrees.

We advertise strategically – we know which courses make the best design engineers – and we recruit carefully. This year we’ve received over 150 CVs from potential students, which has given us a great field to choose from.

And how do the students benefit? They gain hands-on industry knowledge which helps them to build their confidence, recognise their strengths and understand where they want to direct their career. During an internship, they develop their skills across a wide variety of disciplines, both technical and commercial, and gain valuable experience working with teams designing real-life products. Spending a year in industry gives students important professional contacts and can lead to great job opportunities.

Danny Godfrey, director of eg technology ltd, was a panel judge at last week’s 'Health Hack', the latest in a series of free events organised by Medtech Accelerator.

Health Hack provides a platform for innovators to work with industry experts to help develop their ideas for innovative solutions in medical technology, including devices, diagnostics, software and eHealth. Participants include clinical stakeholders, NHS experts, product developers, academics and business consultants. After an open call for innovations, several individual ideas are shortlisted. Each team or innovator then has the opportunity to shape their idea with the support of a team and to refine it ahead of presenting to a panel of judges. The winning idea is given the opportunity to present to MedTech Accelerator Investment Panel, with a chance of winning up to £125,000 of funding to develop the idea.

“It is always inspiring to see the range of ideas and the passion that the MedTech community brings to these events” commented Danny. “All of the ideas that were presented have the potential to make a real difference to patients, the NHS and business in the East of England.”
