Input from diverse communities of parents & educators is critical if #NewYork is going to take advantage of the opportunities in #ESSA to help spotlight & address the systemic inequities in our education system impacting students of color, low-income students, students with disabilities & English learners.

We’ll be listening closely Wednesday to hear if & how Betsy DeVos prioritizes resources for — & the academic outcomes of — students who have been historically underserved by our education system.
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Betsy DeVos for U.S. Secretary of Education, and on Wednesday, she will appear in front of the Senate HELP Committee for her confirmation hearing. As secretary, DeVos will be the lead administrator for hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of programs that affect every facet of public education from pre-K through college. She’ll oversee the …

Anytime is a good time for improvement-minded institutional leaders, faculty or students to engage campus communities in honest, data-driven conversations about what we might do better for our college students.

We've got the resources to help!
This op-ed first appeared at Inside Higher Ed. Around this time every year, as colleges and universities begin to spring back to life, I am reminded of my years working within central administration and the excitement in watching the sea of people full of promise come spilling back onto the campus. I remember the familiar faces of returning students, beaming …

Right now every state in the country is drafting plans on how to measure how well schools & districts are educating students, & the ways to support & hold them accountable for the performance of all students.

Make sure your voice is included in every key decision, now & in the future!

A well-designed state accountability system sets expectations for what it means to be a good school. It recognizes schools doing exceptional work for all groups of students & prompts action to improve schools that need to raise student achievement, particularly for groups of students who have historically been underserved.

Why is it important to hold schools accountable for individual student groups?

Because no school should get an A when it is failing whole groups of students!

Celebrate Grad Rates, Yes, But Don’t Sit Back Just Yet. While the latest trend in High School #GradRates offer some good news, there were still 660,000 students who did not walk across the stage on graduation day, a sobering reminder that there’s still much more good news to be made.

It's been 13 months since the Every Student Succeeds Act (#ESSA) was passed by Congress & signed into law by Pres. Obama.

Starting as soon as April, states will submit their plans on how to ensure all students receive a high quality education, under the new law, to the Dept. of Education.

Know how you can get involved!

Nearly 4 in 5 of the #500MillionClub have an annual net price for low-income students that exceeds 60% of their annual family income.

Colleges & Universities must do more to help enroll & graduate students from low-income families.

College begins in Kindergarten
Introduction
The Education Trust promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levels—pre-kindergarten through college. Our goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign far too many young people—especially those from low-income families or who are black, Latino, or American Indian—to lives on the margins of the American mainstream.
