Today is World Water Day.
ECOdept is proud to support The Nature Conservancy that works to protect this precious and limited resource - like the beautiful Independence Lake in California and Nevada.
Called the "jewel of the Sierra," Independence Lake not only provides a critical source of freshwater, but is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiast.

The best way to inspire change within the travel community is to simply be that change. Sounds easy enough, right? By being the change you want to see in the world, you’ll inspire others follow your examples. Here are five ways you can travel more responsibly and start to inspire that change.

1. Forget the fancy guidebooks, luxury hotels and wasteful tour operators.
2. Take advantage of the Internet to do free research on the destination you’re visiting, including where you should go, how you should get there and where you should avoid.
3. Stay B&Bs, farmstays, homestays and other local accommodations.
4. Shop local, including restaurants, boutiques and tour operators.
5. Walk or use public transportation whenever possible.

When it comes to responsible tourism, exactly whose job is it to educate travelers? The truth is, we all are.

By making responsible travel education a pubic conversation through blog posts, podcasts, videos, events and everyday encounters, we can teach each other through our personal stories. By sharing our experiences, we can inspire other travelers, thus encouraging industry leaders--like hotels and tour operators--to implement change.

As a community, we travelers have a strong voice, let’s use it to inspire more environmentally friendly hotel options, responsible tours and authentic learning experiences. After all, isn’t that what travel is all about?
