Chris Hoch and his wife Karen have been eBay customers for many years. They used to participate in ironman competitions and eBay was a great marketplace to buy the necessary equipment and gear at affordable prices. One day Chris and Karen decided to splurge on a high-end coffee maker. Because these machines are very expensive and delicate, they require regular cleaning and descaling. To the couple’s surprise, the descaling tablets they found online were very expensive, with no cheaper, generic alternatives available. That’s when Chris and Karen decided to invent their own line of licensed descaling tablets and offer them to other coffee aficionados, for a fraction of the price. They used eBay as their test market, and before they knew it, the business took off. Today, they sell their descaling tablets and solutions, as well as brand name clothing. Chris and Karen also offer classes at the local Spokane Community college to teach others in their community how to start a successful business on eBay. While Chris is currently still employed by the marketing department of the United States Postal Service, Karen has left her teaching job to pursue Tough Rooster full-time. Check out his eBay store using eBay Seller ID tuffrooster.

Saddle Up, a Western Saddle and Tack Shop, is a family owned and operated small business. In addition to Saddle Up’s great selection of new and used western saddles and tack, the business also trades, consigns and buys customers’ used saddles and tack. Saddle Up was started as a retirement hobby by Richard (Dick) Van Proosdy in 1996. Dick’s daughter, Danna, joined the business in 2009 and took over the marketing and finance aspects of the business. In 2013, Danna took a twelve week business course through Mi Casa, an organization dedicated to advancing the economic success of Latino and working families in the Denver Metro area. That’s where she got the recommendation to sell her products online on the eBay marketplace. Danna has been selling her products successfully on eBay ever since and has developed her own website. Understanding that horses are a big investment, Danna offers beginning riders a practical saddle upgrade program, which allows them to purchase a less expensive saddle and later get 30% off towards an upgrade to a higher priced saddle. Selling online has helped Saddle Up grow immensely, while almost doubling its sales. In 2014, Danna bought the business from her father. Check out her eBay store using eBay Seller ID saddleupcolo.

411Marine, also known as ABC Motors & Marine, is a small, family operated business located between Hilton Head Island, SC and Savannah, GA, and a stone’s throw away from the inner-coastal waterway. 411Marine owner Chris Bright started his business when he sold an old boat part on eBay as an experiment. It worked, and 411Marine has continued to grow and evolve. 411Marine makes the environment a top priority, offering unique services to the community with full vessel deconstruction and the upcycling of gently used parts, engines and accessories for the consumption of boating enthusiasts worldwide. By partnering with local marinas and the community at large, 411Marine strives to raise environmental awareness by offering responsible alternatives to disposing of a boat or watercraft in the 9’ - 45’ range in landfills. The 411Marine staff has a combined 30+ years of experience assisting customers with navigating the reusable inventory of top manufacturers’ brands to find the correct items that fit their needs. In the wake of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, 411Marine is working harder than ever to educate people about toxic waste and the importance of lessening the burden of the waste on landfills, an unintended by-product of the boating industry. Check out their eBay store using eBay Seller ID 411Marine.

Sarge & Red’s is an online hobby and gaming store specializing in Magic: The Gathering cards, Dungeons and Dragons accessories and more. While the business focuses on fantasy, the story behind how it came to be is truly magical. In 2013, John Davis (aka Sarge) and his wife Denise (aka Red), decided to adopt their first child. Friends and family were thrilled for the couple and eager to assist with the expensive process, pitching in with fundraisers and donations. One friend couldn’t donate cash, but offered up a collection of hobby cards that he thought might be of value for John to sell. Thanks to this gift, John, a deputy sheriff, discovered a second career selling collectibles on eBay. Though he admits the initial learning curve was steep, he now understands the world of hobby gaming and cards, and truly enjoys interacting with the community while adding to his inventory. His online store (a nod to his past military service and his wife’s red hair) has taken off and he looks forward to eventually taking it full-time after retirement. In the meantime, he enjoys traveling to buy inventory and watching the business grow. Check out his eBay store using eBay Seller ID sarge_and_reds.
