current

a ripple

I am learning to read the Book of Nature. It is a complex read and I feel I'm in primary school again. I can point and sound out: "That is a bug!" The actual name will come later when I learn to sound out more advanced sentences, complete with Latin. It takes a lifetime to know much of anything. But one afternoon this week, I walk into the Schulenberg Prairie with the intention to pay attention. The amount of diversity astounds me. I'm overwhelmed by the beauty, standing still and leaning into the tallgrass...

The shore might be safer,
but we wade into the current
- instant rush.

One feels the power of moving water;
lean toward the mountain from which it flows
- grace brought down.

Each step, smooth and rough at the same time,
each step, a search for security
- one must be attentive.

Lock arms to cross.
Everything we want faces upstream.

Patience and steadfastness lead us to calmer water,
shallow at the bend, we cast into the center
- mend the line.

Eyes set on the strike indicator -
then, lift and toward the shore -
the thrill of tension in a brown trout
- in this learning how to pray.

From where I sit,
the rush of the Colorado River,
the red rocks of Moab, a timeline.
My eldest son appears, far from me,
on top of a massive fallen boulder;
a good mark added to the map.
All that is in view is passing:
this river,
this sandstone,
my son.

On the prairie,
revelation comes through repetition.
One must tarry.

Guard from hurry,
the tasks are Herculean
on the prairie.

Be diligent and warry,
as faithful and watchful as Orion,
one must tarry.

Your heart must learn to carry
emotional elevations
on the prairie.

Care turns seed to berry,
over and over through eons,
one must tarry.

The landscape, so marvelously overrun,
proclaims: what is done is done.
On the prairie,
one must tarry.

HAIBUN DCLXXVI: First Things
The garden plot is charged and ready to spark. Each morning, I walk out and peer into the dirt. There is much stooping and often kneeling as this is a sanctuary. I proceed with caution, not out of fear, but rather as a way to fully take in the surprise...
