Choosing the Right Browser

Many people have issues viewing certain pages on Dorsetforyou.com and our Jobs sub-site. These problems can range from pages not loading to job application forms refusing to save. When asking users which web browser they are using, the one we find that gives visitors the most trouble is Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Due to this, we recommend that where possible, users navigate Dorsetforyou.com with an alternative such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or Safari on Apple Mac (although a PC version of Safari is also available).

All of these alternative browsers are free and in some cases offer a much more intuitive experience online than Internet Explorer does. It was the case that in the past, new computers came with Internet Explorer pre-loaded in the Windows Operating System and it was down to the user to investigate other alternatives. However, due to new competition laws, all new machines running Windows must present new owners with the option to download a different web browser and tailor their online experience according to their individual tastes.

Here are some useful links to consider when looking at alternative browsing options:

www.google.com/chrome - Google Chrome
www.mozilla.org - Mozilla Firefox
www.opera.com/download - Opera Browser
www.apple.com/uk/safari - Apple Safari
Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

Pre-populating Application Forms on jobs.dorsetforyou.com

Applying for jobs can be a stressful experience at the best of times. Luckily, Dorsetforyou.com has a jobs sub-site that offers details on vacancies within the county council, district councils and also private companies within Dorset and the surrounding areas. If you have issues when applying for vacancies, you can contact the HR Help-desk - however this post aims to explain one of the main problems people come up against when using our jobs site: previous details not being pre-populated when trying to apply for a new vacancy.

We'll try to keep this as simple as possible, so bear with us!

When you log in to the jobs site, the first thing you will see is your 'dashboard.' This is your personal space on the jobs site where you can view previous applications and also keep track of any incomplete applications that you have saved. You can also change your password and any other personal details.

On the right hand side of your dashboard you will also see the box pictured below. Here, in this area of the dashboard is where you can enter your employment history, educational qualifications and a whole range of other data. It is from here that any application forms will 'pull' pre-population data whenever you wish to apply for a new job. If you haven't entered anything into these sections, there will be no data for the website to incorporate into a new application form.

So, in order to have your forms pre-populate, it is vital that you have filled in the sections in your dashboard - simply filling in an application form manually will not save anything you type in.
