We’re growing increasingly impatient, and a lot of research attests to this fact. Perhaps the most notable is a 2015 study by Microsoft Corporation that surveyed 2,000 people and studied the brain activity of 112 other people with electroencephalograms (EEGs). It was observed that our attention span has shrunk massively from the 12 seconds it used to be in the year 2000 to 8 seconds now. In contrast, we have a shorter attention span than a goldfish — which has an attention span of 9 seconds.

In all societies around the world, more boys than girls are born; the sex ratio is 102 to 108 male for every 100 female live births. Because baby boys are more fragile than girls, have less developed immune systems than girls and are more likely to die in infancy, it’s evolution’s way of compensating for the “anticipated” loss.

David W. Anthony on knowing your family tree...

"It is disconcerting to realize how few of our ancestors most of us can recognize or even name."

"You have four great-grandmothers, women sufficiently close to you genetically that you see elements of their faces, and skin, and hair each time you see your reflection. Each had a maiden name she heard spoken thousands of times, and yet you probably cannot recall any one of their maiden names."

"If we are lucky, we may find their birth names in genealogies or documents, although war, migration, and destroyed records have made that impossible for many Americans."

"Our four great-grandmothers had full lives, families, and bequeathed to us many of our most personal qualities, but we have lost these ancestors so completely that we cannot even name them."

"How many of us can imagine being so utterly forgotten just three generations from now by our own descendants that they remember nothing of us--not even our names?"

Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
—Lewis Carroll, 1872, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
