Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland was recently named “diplomat of the year” at a forum hosted by Foreign Policy magazine in the U.S. In her acceptance speech, Freeland talked about threats to liberal democracies, and criticized the protectionist measures being taken by Trump administration in the U.S. You can read about it at: https://greatcanadianspeeches.ca/

SPEECH ON CANADA-U.S. INTEGRATION

In the 1880s, Goldwin Smith, an British expat living in Toronto, took up the cause of having Canada integrate with the U.S. Given President Trump’s recent string of insults to the prime minister and threats toward Canadians, Smith’s speech provides an interesting juxtaposition to say the least. WILFRID LAURIER ON LIBERALISM
AND THE CHURCH

I have posted a speech by Sir Wilfrid Laurier to my Great Canadian Speeches blog. Laurier was speaking at a time when the Catholic Church in Quebec was hostile toward Liberalism and worked against Laurier from the pulpit during election campaigns. He decided to meet his critics head on and gave a masterful speech in Quebec City in June, 1877. You can read it at: https://greatcanadianspeeches.ca/

1990: AFN CHIEF ERASMUS
SPEAKS ON SELF-GOVERNMENT

George Erasmus gave this speech in 1990, not long after the Meech Lake Accord flamed out because it recognized the English and French, but not Indigenous peoples, as the founders of Canada.

IN PHARMACARE DEBATE
LOOK TO T.C. DOUGLAS, EMMETT HALL

Finance Minister Bill Morneau talked about pharmacare in his recent budget speech, but he soon undercut his own proposal. I suggest that Morneau should look to the vision of Tommy Douglas and Emmett Hall, two of the founders of medicare.
