My disappointment with this company started earlier this winter when I cam to their warehouse with 2 other boaters friends to buy some stuff and to see the rigid dinghies. To make long story short employee at the store was not too accommodating and we were disappointed to find out we needed to make an appointment in order to see these boats. we drove 2 hours each way for nothing. My friend ended up buying a walker bay from another smaller dealer who was able to accommodate us in short time. Here is my HUGE disappointment with another negative experience with Defender. I emailed their inflatables department 3 weeks ago in order to coordinate an appointment Friday 10/21. Was told to touch base in 2 weeks quote- if you will be there after 5:00 it depends what my wife plans for the evening says the person. OK. I emailed again last night, giving the "employee" a week notice and gladly I am able to leave an hour early as my wife found a sub for her last class so excited I am emailing the same person letting him know I should be there by 5:00. What I get is the following email, A BUNCH OF ATTITUDE AND COMPLAINS FROM THIS PERSON AND JUST TO FIND OUT I AM ACTUALLY EMAILING WITH THE OWNER AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY WHO WILL NOT WAIT FOR ME, I spent $10,000 with this company and about $5,000 just this year but never again, here is the final email from the OWNERS: I will assume that you’ve not been here before. Defender is not a tiny boat dealership with people sitting idle, waiting for a prospect to walk through the door. The Walker Bay dealer in RI does not own a 125,000 sq ft facility that shuts down at a specific time, with 20 building zones that are alarm-coded and locked when the massive facility closes and the staff of 120 people goes home. Defender can accommodate you during its business hours, but not when the facility is closed or about to close. Not when the lights are shut off and the alarm monitoring begins. And, no. I will not wait for someone, repeat customer or not, to attempt to make their way up the clogged I-95 corridor, a trip I have taken least a thousand times in the last 30 years. I know it intimately and know well how congested it can get on a Friday afternoon. I don’t get to see my family very often as I work about 100 hours a week. So, in answer to your question, no I do not want to gamble on you making that journey on a Friday afternoon in the time you think you will. You can refer to it as “unaccommodating” if you like. To me, I just want to have some time with my wife on a Friday night. I value that more than any possible sale and always will. I feel your disappointment is unfounded, but that is my opinion. Good luck. Stephan Lance Owner & President Defender Industries, Inc So Mr. Lance. You are arrogant and full of your self and you will lose my business and my friends business to smaller companies.

Good products and shipping, but if items are on back order you won't find out until after you pay

I regret going to Defender Marine. Ten days after having bought a chart plotter online and paid for expedited delivery I phone to ask where it was. There was apparently some small print that I had missed whereby I should have - after the purchase- phoned so that I could be told the item was on back order. Finally the chart plotter arrived, without the charts, so now I'm on my 4th phone call with them to try and find out when/how I can get some charts for the chart plotter - as per my original purchase nearly a month ago. Sure I can use a paper chart in the interim, but honestly this experience has not been worth the money I saved.

Good Morning Joy, I saw your review and do again have to say the fact that it was a back ordered item was not apparently some small print, we really do our best through the entire online process to advise of the stock status: The stock status said: call to confirm. Then when you check out before the order is placed we show the quantity back ordered. And then, finally, on the email copy, the one you sent back to us shows the quantity back ordered. I do feel we do our due diligence in making the check-out process user friendly and offering all information up front. I understand you don’t feel the same and we can agree to disagree however we still appreciate the feedback because all feedback is important. Thank you, Donna Lillis Call Center Manager

It bothers me to have to write this review, as I've been very happy with every interaction with Defender -- up until today. Defender has been my go-to for a long time, having better prices than most of the competition, and carrying a large selection of high quality products. I'm in the market for a new RIB dinghy, and after deciding on a product after doing some research, I looked at Defender first, and they carried the Mercury RIB that I wanted. I also called around to some local dealers closer to home (Long Island), who were both less expensive, but had to order the RIB with a week delivery time. I need it for the end of this week, and with my work travel schedule, it just made sense to make the 2 hour drive to Defender and buy it since they had it in-stock. I made the 130 mile drive today, and after getting caught in unexpected traffic, and then getting in to a small fender bender on the way, I arrived at 2:45, just before they closed at 3. I went right to the inflatables section, and gave the associate the model information of the RIB I wanted to purchase. He confirmed it was in-stock, and then advised that they were closing and he wouldn't have time to complete the sale. I asked if he would be able to find someone else to handle the transaction for me, he called another gentleman over (may have been a manager) who also advised that I would have to come back another day. Don't get me wrong, I understand that I arrived late and that these folks have families to get home to, etc. With that said though, I wasn't coming in to buy a $20 part and asking them to stay late for assistance. I was there to spend $2000. I am beyond frustrated because I have been a loyal customer, having spent thousands of dollars there in the last nine months. I can guarantee after this experience that I will be taking my business to any place BUT Defender going forward.

Their customer Service is absolutely outstanding. Tina Pellegrini and I have been working together for several years now and she is the best. I had a major electronics purchase to make and they were unable to match the price and I actually felt guilty buying it elsewhere. She spoke to their buyer and they were unable to come close, surprising given their volume. Every other time they have been competitive. I enjoy doing business with her and would characterise my self as a loyal Defender customer and I am in Canada although my yacht is in the US.

Great selection and better prices than anyone else within a reasonable distance. Their annual spring warehouse sale is definitely worth the trip, but it is a mob scene!

The help at the fender was really good but the prices have got to come down a heck of a lot the prices have to be competitive with other places when you're working on a shoestring budget or trying to work on boats you can't do with high prices all of the time
