Silent legions mini review and House rules.

So I recently got Silent legions. I've read the rules through a couple of times and very much like the quality of the content.
It feels like the most rules light of all the rules set in some ways.

Notable additions are Madness and Slaughter dice.
The madness mechanic looks quite good, It doesn't look too punishing to begin with, but I can imagine the slow  descent into madness, assuming you can live that long that is.

Which comes to combat. This is even more deadly then any other iteration of the various iterations off the SWN rules sets.
Mainly because of the slaughter dice, which if you roll 6 or greater on, you do TRIPLE damage, which is pretty much death for any low level character. fortunately, given the nature of this RPG, which is horror, you want to avoid combat even more than any other SWN game.

The GM sandbox tools as usual are fantastic. It's worth buying SL just for that, even if you're not going to use the system and just use it as an accessory for say "Call of Cthulhu".

The spells are suitably dodgy and whilst some are very powerful, not overly so. Still I would recommend going through ALL the spells as a GM to see what fits into your campaign.

I DO have a few house rules though.

1: Max HPs at 1st level. I generally allow this in any level based RPG I run, as low level characters are often so vulnerable. Still, it won't make a lot of difference if you get hit with a slaughter ice roll.

2: Adding Stat bonuses to saves.  It makes Stats more useful and interesting in a game to add stat bonuses to saves.  The specific stat bonus to add would depend on the circumstance of course.

Anyone out there using any houserules?

Anyway, that's it for now. I'll do a proper review sometime once I've actually run the game a few times.

Speaking of which, I'll probably kick off a game on rpol.net sometimes.

Nice review.  I too have run several sessions of Silent Legions, and found it a joy at the table.

Character gen itself is VERY fast. IT took me about 10 minutes to generate a character and I was pretty happy with it.

Anyway, that's it for now. I'll do a proper review sometime once I've actually run the game a few times.

If you decide to go with swn, there's a LOT of material for it, much of it free, but the paid content is good too.
To get a feel for swn, I'd suggest trying out the "hard light" scenario, which takes place on a space station and involves some exploration too.
It'll be good for many fun gaming sessions.
