In this community in Indonesia, families used to spend THREE HOURS every day getting water. Thanks to a new well, it only takes 40 MINUTES.
What would you do with more than two hours of extra time in YOUR day?

Today, the United States and Cuba officially re-established diplomatic relations and reopened their respective embassies in each other's capitals. CWS is a staunch advocate for normalized relations between the U.S. and Cuba and we celebrate President Obama and President Castro for the work that led to today. Years of dedicated, strategic and consistent ecumenical advocacy by CWS and our member communions and denominations have contributed to this milestone.

Yet, more work lies ahead. Lifting the U.S. trade embargo would vastly improve the day-to-day lives of many Cubans. Let that be the next goal. This is a humanitarian issue that CWS will continue to focus on as lifting the embargo will greatly improve the lives of our sisters and brothers in Cuba.

We are excited about what the future holds for the U.S. and Cuba. Today, we applaud a concrete step towards peace.

- The Rev. John L. McCullough, President and CEO of CWS

Since April, tens of thousands of Burundians have fled their country following election violence and a failed coup.

CWS and ACT Alliance are serving Burundian refugees in neighboring Tanzania through water, shelter, protection and materials like blankets, clothing and cooking equipment. Our plan to support those who have fled: http://ow.ly/PHQW3

Four years ago, Amal was at the end of her rope. She struggled to feed her children and came to the only place she knew that could help.

Now, she has a college degree and is a mentor to other refugee women. Her story: http://www.cwsglobal.org/stories/amal-stars.html

Think that providing support to people is a genuine ministry regardless of one's religious background or persuasion, but when you provide support in areas related to personal experience it gives that ministry all the more meaning.

Today is the presidential election in Burundi, the political unrest of which has led to a refugee crisis in recent months.

In neighboring Tanzania, CWS & our ACT Alliance partners are supplying Burundian refugees in Nyarugusu Camp with 10,000+ gallons of clean water daily. Whatever today's election brings, CWS will be there, providing water, latrines and more: http://www.cwsglobal.org/blog/water-and-latrines.html

Fighting hunger and poverty. Promoting peace and justice.
Introduction
Church World Service works to help those who face hardship have better lives. Through CWS, we provide emergency relief for those displaced by disasters or war, we resettle refugees, we support programs that foster self-reliance, and we advocate for those without a voice.

CWS is working with partners to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice among the world's most vulnerable people.
