Good Evening. My name is Michael Arthur Taylor Jr. and I am the Office Assistant for Best Buddies Maryland. I’m going to tell you a little bit about my past and my experiences with Best Buddies over the past ten years.
When I was 12 years old, my mother put me in Rosewood institution. I spent many years at Rosewood then moved to Hillcrest Center in Massachusetts. I lived there for a year, before going back to Rosewood. I spent 30 years of my life living in an institution. I was not happy living in an institution. I did not get to see my family while I was there and I was not allowed to talk on the phone. I was not allowed to decorate my room, the food was terrible and the staff was not friendly. I spent my days working but there was not any socializing. I spent 30 years of my life there being robbed of the freedom that some people may take for granted.
In 1999, I had an IEP meeting with my service coordinator, where I talked about how I wanted to get out of Rosewood. I did a lot of work on my own to get out. Finally in May of 1999, I got out of Rosewood for good!
After I left, I went to live in a group home and began working at my first job. I worked in the cafeteria in a state office building in Baltimore. Next I was hired by the ARC of Maryland for the Living Free Campaign. The Living Free Campaign is a group that advocates for people with disabilities, and works to get people in institutions free. I was also one of the mentors to Stand Up and Speak Out, the self-advocacy group for people who used to be in Rosewood Center. There I helped people learn about choices.
I spent a lot of time advocating for people with disabilities and helped to shut down 2 institutions. Governor Martin O'Malley closed Rosewood center for good! I did this because I wanted other people to have their freedom too. In 2001, I was awarded the ARC of Maryland Outstanding Advocate of the Year Award for my work promoting the rights, dignity, and quality of life for persons with disabilities. A year later I won the Ronald Johnson Memorial Award for leadership and self advocacy.
I moved into my own apartment, which I call the Freedom Pad 1! I love living in my own place. I can decorate it like I want and talk on the phone whenever I want. I have support staff that helps me with Doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping two times a week.
In August 2002 I began working for Best Buddies Maryland, as the Office Assistant. My job duties include planning events and happy hours, answering the phone, shredding papers, making copies, mail pick up and drop off, generating citizen star newsletters, creating spreadsheets and data entry. In 2011, I organized a statewide happy hour that raised over $800. I advertised the event and secured donations from local businesses and artists. My hard work was recognized when my coworkers nominated me to be BBMD’s Employee of the Quarter.
Through the years, I have become an Ambassador for the state. As an ambassador it is important to educate and empower others such as myself to be leaders and public speakers in their communities and workplace. Now I am on the Best Buddies Maryland Advisory Board, have testified before the state legislature, and met Governor Ehrlich. Working for Best Buddies has made me feel very happy and fulfilled, and has given me opportunities to continue to be a leader and advocate for others with disabilities.
In addition to working for Best Buddies, I have been matched in the Citizens program for almost 10 years, but it seems like forever. My Buddy’s name is Wayne Larrivey. We have gone to Best of Maryland Awards & friendship walks together. Wayne & I went to see Clay Aiken in Concert. We also go to Baltimore Ravens Games and Baltimore Orioles Games! We communicate by cell phone and we only talk about good things. I value our friendship and we have a good connection.
I want all of you to know that Best Buddies and the work that we are doing is important! I have friends out there in the community and have a family within the Best Buddies staff. I’ll be citizens buddies with Wayne forever! This friendship is important for me, since we’ve been friends for 10 years and it’s nice to know you always have someone there. Having a job is important to me because it means I can live independently, have my freedom, and live at Freedom Pad 1! Best Buddies makes me better and has improved my life. Through Best Buddies I have friends, a job, and a family. Working for Best Buddies makes me happy, and I’m not going anywhere! I’m staying put!
Thank you for have me here today. I’m a wild and crazy guy!

Are you a #CSI fan AND a Girl Scout cookie fan? We have some facts for you: http://ow.ly/Asizq
Do you buy Girl Scout cookies? These annual treats, while sold by badge-carrying Yumtrepreneurs, are only made by two licensed baking companies: ABC Smart Cookies and Little Brownie Bakers. Tough biz!

Story
Introduction
Tune in Wednesdays at 10/9c on CBS!

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION is a fast-paced drama about a team of forensic investigators trained to solve crimes by examining the evidence. They are on the case 24/7, scouring the scene, collecting the irrefutable evidence and finding the missing pieces that will solve the mystery.

D.B. Russell, the new CSI Supervisor for the grave shift, comes to the team after heading the Seattle Crime Lab. He's a family man and scientist, but not a nerd. Son of hippie parents, he's a "Left Coast" Sherlock Holmes who devours crime novels and looks at every crime scene as if it were a story waiting to be told. Other CSI members include Catherine Willows, the team's former supervisor and an investigator with a cop's instinct for reading human behavior; Nick Stokes, the conscience of the team, often driven by his emotional connection to the victim to always get the job done; Sara Sidle, aka Mrs. Grissom, the moral compass of the team who is relentless in her pursuit of criminals; Greg Sanders, once an off-beat tech analyst and now an experienced and intuitive crime solver; and Morgan Brody, an exile from the Los Angeles Crime Lab and the daughter of Undersheriff Ecklie. She's a natural born investigator who still has a lot to learn about politics and family.

The CSI team members also work closely with Captain Jim Brass, a seasoned detective and protector of CSI, sometimes to a fault; Dr. Albert Robbins, the ever-professional medical examiner; his wise-cracking assistant, David Phillips; and David Hodges, a tech of many talents who often rubs people the wrong way, but never fails to deliver.
