Meet Huda Dhaif, who has always valued education, and now is pursuing a path of teaching others.

“I moved to the United States in 2002 from Iraq, having already finished high school and five years studying religion at Almurtdha University in Damascus, Syria.”

As a mother of a growing family, Huda’s educational journey was often interrupted, but her passion for education remained ingrained in her. She started at CCA as an ESL student to improve her English-language skills, and is now studying Elementary Education.

“Two semesters in the classroom at CCA and reassurance from faculty such as Susan Achziger have convinced me that I can continue on my path to become something important in the community and make my family proud.”

Huda envisions herself as a public school teacher one day so she can pass her love of learning on to others.

Keep pushing towards your goals Huda, we know you can do it!

Meet Alexis Deukam, who came to the U.S. from Cameroon to pursue a career in electrical engineering.

“I won a visa lottery to come to America on my 23rd birthday. Shortly after my arrival, I joined the Air Force.”

After discussing his dreams of electrical engineering with his Air Force supervisor, he was aimed towards CCA’s ESL program to improve his language skills and ensure he had the foundation to continue on his career path.

“My hope is that not only will I one day have the required degree and skills to repair airplanes, but have the necessary training to go back to Cameroon and help them install alternative energy sources, given the substantial costs of electricity there. “

Alexis’s intense focus on his goals is an inspiration to us all. Keep your eyes on the prize, Alexis, we’re sure you’ll make it!

Our President, Betsy Oudenhoven, gives some compelling reasons to take advantage of summer semester:
For most of my life I lived in extremely cold and snowy locations, so the lure of summer was powerful. My family was large and had limited resources so we didn't travel or vacation – we just learned to make the best out of whatever season we happened to be in (which was usually winter).

Meet Amanda Buchanan. Though she started her college career years ago, she left to raise her children and work various jobs.

“I had a nagging sense of wanting to somehow redeem myself.”

In order to get ahead in the workforce she decided to continue her education in the fall of 2013. Amanda is now in her third semester at CCA, with a focus on Nursing.

“When I was younger, that is what I wanted to do. I guess it always stuck with me that if I ever got serious about going back to school, that is what I would become.”

After she finishes her associate degree, she intends on transferring to Metro State University or Regis University to finish her bachelor’s.

“I picture myself one day possibly working with people who battle addiction. I have wanted to do this for so long and now I am getting a chance to do it.”

We know you can do it Amanda, keep up the good work!
