Hi All, I am an SEO specialist which obviously involves a lot content marketing..I have been working on my own sites and agency side for about 3 years now !!
Very much interested in all things content and spend a lot of my time working with creative agencies on rolling out campaigns in this area..
Thinking some topical hangouts would be cool ??

I appreciate your reply, +colm flanagan. I'm with you down the line.

While I was responding to your introduction, I knew others in the community would read it, and thus I, as one of the community's managers, would be able to (indirectly) remind everyone what the scope of this community is. I think it's something that bears repeating from time to time as the community grows. I'd rather do it as conversation than via a from-the-top moderator post for that reason alone. We moderators would like to keep those kind to a minimum.

You make some good observations. There is a lot of empty strategy and CM advice being churned out all the time; most of it designed to get quick hits to the source, but pretty worthless otherwise. The same things being said over and over and over, just by different people under different guises. And I share your concern that content marketing will be its own cancer if the players within it aren't policed better by other content marketers trying to bring a little more integrity and professionalism to the discipline.

What bugs me, and why I'm probably a little more outspoken than others about the difference between CS and CM, is that too many self-serving CM types are using CS as a prop to stage their game. They use the two labels interchangeably as if they are one in the same thing. Some of these people—lets call them carnies—know the fields are different but don't care, and others don't realize there is a difference because they're eating up what the carnies are dishing out. I won't drop any names, but I've seen through a few carny curtains of Oz (easy to do when you moderate a community), and some of them run elaborate productions and have a lot of people fooled.

The link drop-and-fly behavior that is so obvious of certain marketers and SEO types can be the ruin of a good community. We never expected to have so many rules, but it turns out we do need them, and they do seem to be working (with some occasional follow-up from moderators). The rules exist for the very thing we are talking about—cultivating good conversation and worthwhile content.

I have been using link wheels on some long tail (4 / 5 words) and have certainly noticed improvements in rankings.
