Designer Giovanna Roy '15 runs Mermaid Crowns, a company that designs sea-themed sculptured headdresses for specialty boutiques. This weekend she helped out at Nashua's Oceans of Discovery Fairy Fest, a city-sponsored event designed to promote literacy.

Why mermaids for Roy? She has Asperger Syndrome, a form of Autism, and identifies with the inspiring symbol of the mermaid. "She is human but different, beautiful, powerful and lives among the sea animals I love," says Roy on her website, www.mermaidcrowns.com.

A portion of Mermaid Crowns' proceeds go toward the preservation of sea animals and toward autism awareness.

Ultrarunner Zak Wieluns' nemesis is the Vermont 100-Mile Endurance Run, held each July. Twice he has attempted this arduous run. This summer will show if the third time is the charm. Read more about him at http://www.colby-sawyer.edu/currents/articles/going-the-distance.html and about the documentary being made about him by alumni Mike Mooney and Will Peters.

How do you express yourself in the arts, and what art has inspired you?

Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Jon Keenan speculates that strong interest in the arts reflects the variety of skill sets that art education provides. “The arts touch all kinds of areas of study, so the rising number of art majors tells me that there's a need in our society for students who can creatively solve problems in our changing world. Even if they go into medicine, or law, or business, or education, having that foundation is fundamental.”

Colby-Sawyer’s first wind turbine took its place in front of the Susan Colgate Cleveland Library/Learning Center on Saturday, July 13. The 50-foot tall Skystream 3.7 is a residential scale unit and the power it generates will feed back to the main electrical system, helping to offset the college’s energy use.

Made possible by a grant, Colby-Sawyer is one of the first institutions in the area to install such a turbine, according to WindGuys USA co-founder Jeff Goodman. “It is a great educational tool that will teach students and community members about what we can gain from heavy wind power," Goodman says.
