Someone to lean on
It takes a special type of person to work in the medical field, just ask Garrett Slaney.
Even at age 18, Slaney knew he wanted to help people through a career in the health care field, going so far as enrolling into the Bachelor of Kinesiology program at Memorial University in St. John’s. But in the end he discovered it wasn’t the right fit. Fast forward 10 years, and Slaney finally found his calling through the Rehabilitation Assistant program at College of the North Atlantic.

CNA renews historic international contract
November 29 - CNA and the State of Qatar announced the signing of a new three-year comprehensive agreement. The signing represented the continuation of the largest international post-secondary agreement ever awarded to a Canadian post-secondary institution. The contract was finalized at a formal signing ceremony at the Qatar Embassy in Ottawa with both college and Qatari representatives expressing their pride in College of the North Atlantic-Qatar and its role as that country’s premier technical college. CNA students and grads set the tone at provincial music awards
October 18 - Bonavista was humming with energy as crowds descended on the town for MusicNL Week 2016. Sold out a week in advance, Sunday’s MusicNL Awards Gala featured notable performances from such acts as Waterfront Fire, Cabbages & Kings, Rum Ragged, Long Distance Runners and Repartee. Sandy Morris, MusicNL Lifetime Achievement recipient, and Louis McDonald, Unsung Hero recipient, made a moving tribute to the Man of a Thousand Songs, Ron Hynes, with a rendition of Hynes’ classic tune, Killer Cab. Celebrating a decade of giving
September 30 - The Fry Family Foundation again demonstrated its unwavering support to students of CNA on Sept. 27, announcing $595,000 for student scholarships over the next seven years. This amount is in addition to the more than $400,000 already donated to CNA by the Foundation during the past decade, bringing the total commitment from the Fry Family to nearly $1 million to date. Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador invest to renew infrastructure at CNA
September 8 - Canadians will be better equipped for the well-paying middle-class jobs of today and tomorrow as a result of an $18.5 million investment in the CNA Bay St. George campus in Stephenville. A joint federal-provincial investment was announced by Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for the Long Range Mountains, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Humber – Gros Morne and by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and MHA for Corner Brook. CNA Board Chair honoured with Order of Newfoundland and Labrador
December 15 - Cheryl Stagg, Chair of CNA’s Board of Governors, was presented with the prestigious Order of Newfoundland and Labrador at the investiture ceremony held at Government House in St. John’s. The ceremony was presided over by The Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and Chancellor of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. Grand Falls-Windsor team wins at largest Case competition
November 22 - A record number of teams converged at CNA’s Grand Falls-Windsor campus to compete in the college’s 11th annual Business Case competition – their biggest one to date. Six teams travelled from St. John’s to represent Prince Philip Drive and Ridge Road campuses, five teams participated from Grand Falls-Windsor, two teams came from Clarenville, one came from Port aux Basques, and one travelled overseas to represent CNA’s campus in Doha, Qatar, bringing this year’s team total to 15. CNA alumnus claims third business award in 2016
October 27 - CNA alumnus Alex Hennifent was recognized as one of 10 regional winners in The Globe and Mail’s national Small Business Challenge contest – beating out more than 3,400 entrants. His business, VOLTFUSE, is a successful Newfoundland-based headwear and clothing brand he started when he was just 14-years-old as a way to promote local snowboarding in his hometown of Grand Falls-Windsor. CNA graduates receive Governor General’s Academic Medals
September 28 - Ten of the 14 CNA graduates to win Governor General’s Academic Medal this year received their medals from the Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor for Newfoundland and Labrador, at an official ceremony at Government House in St. John’s. The ceremony was also attended by college interim President and CEO Bob Gardiner, and Board Chair Cheryl Stagg. The medals are awarded each year to the graduates who achieve the highest overall average upon completion of their diploma-level program at their respective campus.
