Last night's GDG featured Brad Fitzpatrick talking about Camlistore. Brad + MPL  spent the weekend at +LinuxFest Northwest and also spoke on Camlistore. Monday's talk followed a Camlistore hacking day #camlihackday425

For fellow #GDG organizers with communities interested in digitizing your own personal shoebox of social data and learning Go programming language Camlistore is a great personal side project.

Camlistore can be deployed locally on your own laptop or easily hosted on Google cloud platform. Written mostly in Golang, Camlistore can be deployed in other modern environments, there is also an Android uploader app to sync pictures. The Camli architecture is designed for importers, such a Twitter, FourSquare (Swarm), RSS, Picasa -- a RunKeeper importer is under development.

People with many years of emails in archives often ask about importing them into Camlistore, this is planned, but is not there yet. Since Camlistore is F/OSS, Golang developers can contribute new importers. Source submissions work rather like Linux's.

Personally I learned the most about Google Compute Platform by hands on hacking on Camlistore often deploying on GCP and even writing a front end for to modernize perishable food storage in very large cooler. Share what is latest stored in the cooler for distribution or pick up by food banks. Not Camlistores' designed use case, but you get the idea it is flexible for building on.

Thanks to all Seattle GDG organizers on A/V, and everyone who made this event happen.
Clive.

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2016 Results

Highlights caught my eye:

-Devs love Rust but do JavaScript
-Dart pays big bucks
-Women are more likely to be ML devs
-Students more likely to be Android devs
-Devs dread VB, WP,  Sharepoint, Salesforce
-PHP, Ruby fading, Node, Angular, React rising.
-Go adoption, I expected to show more (not yet).

Shame if after G+ HOA pioneering engineering work FB walks away with the video killer app for enterprise by packaging UX.  #hci

If the Alaska Way viaduct withstands drilling only  20-40 feet underneath its pilings I'll eat my hat.
A sinkhole that formed in January behind Bertha’s cutting face led independent experts to emphasize stricter protocols before contractors continue the Highway 99 tunnel dig under Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.

We’ve rewritten the component.kitchen backend server to rip out a popular templating language and replace it with plain JavaScript functions. Recent language improvements in ES2015 have, in our opinion, made it a sufficiently capable general-purpose language that we’ve dropped use of a special-purpose template language. As we began a rewrite of our site, we were inspired by our recent work using plain JavaScript functions to create web components and decided to apply the same philosophy to our backend as well.
