Great to see something other than crime prevention tips. I started thinking that Sunnyvale is all about crime...

CRIME PREVENTION TIP OF THE DAY: Join a Neighborhood Association.

Sunnyvale has very active neighborhood associations that have come together to watch out for one another, promote the interests of the residents in that area or just a way to bring a sense of community back to their streets. Being a part of a neighborhood association not only strengthens the community, but provides an information link to the City during an emergency to help you keep informed.

To find your closest Neighborhood Association or to start a new one, visit http://Neighbors.inSunnyvale.com

CRIME PREVENTION TIP: Take a photo or short video of your valuables.

Keeping a record of valuables is not only an important way to determine if something is missing, but it improves the chances of recovering valuables and catching the thief who took them. With so many devices having cameras these days, keeping a digital record has never been simpler. As an added bonus, you and your family will have a record in case of an accidental fire or act of nature.

CRIME PREVENTION TIP: Use a secondary blocking device on all sliding doors and windows.

A simple wooden dowel rod, a piece of scrap wood or metal -- even a sturdy ruler -- can offer great burglary protection when placed in the tracks of a sliding window or door. It should be small enough to lie completely flat in the tracks, but large enough to not allow enough space for someone to squeeze a hand through and remove it. If you do use rulers, you have the bonus of always knowing where you can find one.

CRIME PREVENTION TIP: Keep valuables out of vehicle or, at least, out of sight.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle and always conceal items that are being stored in the vehicle temporarily. According to Public Safety Officers, most car thieves are looking for a quickest and easiest grab. So think "out of site, out of mind" when it comes to deterring thefts from vehicle.

See more tips on Vehicle Theft Protection from Chief Grgurina in the July 2012 edition of "Beyond the Badge." http://conta.cc/1cGJFac

CRIME PREVENTION TIP: Thieves avoid the spotlight.

At home, exterior lighting should allow 100 feet of visibility. Whether it's being able to see out or for your neighbors to be able to see the area around your house from the outside, good exterior lighting is a big deterrent to nighttime thieves who do not want to be exposed. More times than not, it's a neighbor who spots suspects and reports it to the police, so make your home visible and, particularly, any possible entry way, visible day or night.

On the go, park in well-lit parking areas. Not only does it make your vehicle a less tempting target, but it improves personal safety when entering and exiting the car.

CRIME PREVENTION TIP: Keep windows and entrances free from external obstructions, like trees or bushes.

While having some shade at your door or window can be nice on a hot summer day, it can also provide the perfect cover for someone to break in to your home unnoticed. Keeping entrances and windows clear from obstructions will help you and your neighbors keep an eye on your property and deter thieves by being too visible.
