The City of Denton announced today the launch of a portal, data.cityofdenton.com, to provide easy access to a wide range of public data. Denton joins a growing number of government agencies across the country that are creating a central location where the public can view and download a variety of civic data. The site hosts government information in open, machine-readable formats while ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and security.

The portal currently hosts 99 downloadable datasets on various City functions and operations, including infrastructure, land use, parks, and gas wells. A key feature of the portal is the interactive mapping function, where citizens can display data geographically on a map of the city. The portal also includes printable maps and links to additional information. To get started, visit data.cityofdenton.com.

Since the City passed the texting ban in May 2014, the Police Department enacted a grace period until installation of signage was complete. With the signage installation now completed on all City roadways, the grace period will end Monday, Feb. 16. On this day, Police will begin conducting traffic stops and issuing citations. For more information, and to view the ordinance, visit www.cityofdenton.com/textingban. #dentonnews

Where does the water go after we use it? In this episode of Denton's Dirty Jobs, David visits the Pecan Creek Water Reclamation Plant and  explores the specifics to water reclamation. Warning some scenes may not be suitable for viewers with weak stomachs, but try to watch it anyway. #educational #dentonnews

Update Friday, Feb. 27 1:45 p.m.: Due to the weather delay from Monday, the Thursday residential route was being collected today (Friday).  Because of deteriorating conditions today, collections have been suspended.  Most residents in the Thursday quadrant have had either trash or recycling collected.  The remaining carts will be collected tomorrow, Saturday, as weather permits.  We ask that residents leave the uncollected carts out and they will be emptied as soon as possible.

Normal commercial dumpster collections are anticipated to begin Saturday as conditions allow.

The landfill at ECO-W.E.R.C.S. anticipates keeping regular operating hours today and Saturday.

Due to existing and projected inclement weather creating hazardous driving conditions, City offices and facilities will be closed Monday, Feb. 23. A final decision concerning trash pickup will be made in the morning based on road conditions whether or not the trucks can safely manage pickup, so for now go ahead and set your carts out.

I think some of you already anticipated closures. #preppers
