Have you ever wanted to keep reading that article AND finish your work at the same time? With the SoundGecko extension, now you can.

The SoundGecko extension is a text-to-audio translator that turns any webpage into a playable audio file so you can “listen” to that webpage whenever you’d like. Just click on the extension when you’re on a webpage that you’d like transcribed and SoundGecko will email you a link to your recording.

You can find the SoundGecko extension here in the Chrome Web Store: http://goo.gl/VbTMf #webstorewed

mmm... interesting, think I'd rather read...

Thanks for the head's up. Looks interesting.

Well, could be really useful, not just a gimmick ...

TextAloud does this and gives you control over what gets read and when and with what voice. A link to a recording sounds a little 90s to me.

Hmm, could be good for converting those Longreads articles into podcasts.

I do like it and probably will be used to read some blogs while working on large files for work. I hope there is some thoughtabout it reading pdf files in the future. Being able to listen to science journal articles would make it more useful in my life.

Totally will give this a try sometime!

I am not part of this generation that "can" do a lot of things at the same time.

Um how do you add people from the app?

A great tool to learn a language

That functionality is built into Mac's - has been for 3 versions of the OS

Not everyone uses Chrome on a Windows PC...

Is there an app that allows you to use flash player inside Google chrome on android 4.1? Adobe have stopped supporting it

Folks on XDA-Developers have been passing around the .apk and sideloading it. No guarantees, of course.

IMHO, anything that requires Flash is dead man walking, today.

Does it read all of the ads and things on the side?

Don't let me sound to old school valley on your 6/side, Tim. But OO'well

Besides the bddbandbwishwjdidjjdjsjskd dksnsjfhufjebd enfj infection we got nothin to worry about

How about reading all the comments on a long Google+ topic, possible?

i have seen you tubes translater in work, it can translate a dog bark,
if this is kinda the same maybe it can translate the sh*t that i see sometimes

There was an old Windows program that used to that. Also I think Adobe Reader was able to do that but using only the default voice of Windows Anna or something like that. I wonder what kind of voice is going to be used this time. How about Tom Brokaw?

Possible copyright issues? The recording and playing back, that is...

i just wana eat a fat hamburger why a computer does everything for me, coz im a lazy human being

I use it it works very good

Um, are you really going to be able to give your full attention to either task? If I listen to a recording while doing something else, I miss pieces.

Convert a book over to a web page and voila free audiobook.

Very interesting! But will users become lazy readers? Or worse, illiterate? Maybe that's a stretch. Still, I like the concept.

innovative.if it has the ability to schedule and play the recordings, then its even better.

Yeah +Cameron Hernandez , I suppose if you're driving or cleaning you can do it, but if it's work that requires concentration, you couldn't. I like the idea, but I could just as easily read it. I like the idea of making it a podcast or audiobook but the post alludes to using this while multitasking.

Great stuf 10x a lot for this using it every single day and love it ;)

Oh man! This App is awesome & genius! If Developers add an option to read selected texts and reduce the speed slightly( or make it adjustable)would be perfect.

this assumes a kind of superhuman level of multitasking. or that you're planning on doing a half-arsed job.

Cool but I bet it sounds like a robot like on OSX and listening to that for more than 3min makes me want to bash m head in to a wall to make t stop.

I HAVE HAD IT WITH GOOGLE. MOST OF MY CONTACTS EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE GONE! STUPID FREE GMAIL HAS BEEN DELETING ALMOST EVERY CONTACT I HAVE SINCE GOOGLE+ CIRCLES CAME ON BOARD. THERE'S NO ONE TO CONTACT ABOUT THE PROBLEM, NOT A PLACE TO GO! GOOGLE NO ONE HAS BEEN MORE LOYAL TO YOU THAN I. I DO THINK YOU ARE A GOOD COMPANY, BUT THIS HAS DONE IT. YOU ARE STUPID! I'M GOING TO YAHOO, WITH MARISSA MAYER. YOU GUYS ARE NOW TOO BUSY TRYING TO RULE THE WORLD.

it's cool but it's not new to me.

Yeah well google chrome is always advertising but that's good.........at least they are keeping up with the technology

1) No need to shout
2) Did you do a backup?
3) Wish you a speedy recovery! ;)

Mac can do this without an extension.

I am using SoundGecko for a while now. It is great!

Ha ha ha ha true then i shouuld have but i didn't wanna make it that obvious

I don't like the way this plugin works. When you give it the URL of a site, instead of just "reading" the text on the site to you, it sends an email to you (that can take minutes to arrive) then you click on the link in the mail. What's wrong with just opening a new tab with that link URL instead of emailing it to me? (Or do both). It's not the seamless multi-tasker way of doing things. I'll keep it around, but will probably use it less often than I would if it were a one-click operation. Click the button, it opens a new tab, and you carry on. That's what it should be.

+Thorby Corvin Are you lost? I think you want the youtube comments pages. That's where the stupid "First" type people hang out. Troll heaven.

The iPad has that already!

That's awesome. I just tried it out. I think I'll use this one a lot. :)

I generally use Mac's inbuilt speech function, but was really looking for an extension like this for my browser. Really nice.

search google for gf.jpg that would have to do for you guys for several years until you grow up.

im already a fan of audiobooks, so this plays into my affinity ;)

+Derek Davies, For me it typically takes a few seconds. Never had to wait for 30 seconds even... And opening a new tab, clicking your email and then opening the link really doesn't take that long.
Are people really getting this impatient? You literally have the world at your fingertips with a click of some buttons. Lighten up.

I've been waiting for this for a long time.. Now if only it could do that with my classes.. That would be perfect for long drives!

I've noted before that I love this idea

oh, too late. It is hanging in Opera since 2003 or earlier. Opera is a decade ahead than the present browsers :) They provide even before you dream of it !!!

Good.reading or listening our attention wiil still be drawn from work.

Multitasking is just urban myth... if you wanna work work and read, Do work and then after read

It doesn't work on nexus 7 yet :-(

i tested it its nice except that the audio file should play right on rather than being mailed:/

Just tried Select and Speak Chrome extension and it is awsome!
Highlight the text, click the button. It will speak to you. No Links or accounts.
I guess for the mobile side you need a link due to still limited functionality of the platform. + for laptops

OSX...right click -> speech -> start speaking

just linked google drive to save the audio files, is there any audio player that I can use as a default player for chrome? or any other tips are welcome

edit: found DriveTunes fr the job

It's worth mentioning that safari will read text in a remarkably human voice on demand. Built in. That and the reader service are the only reasons I use it.

It is a great extension, thanks for suggesting it. I hope the pro features will be awesome :)

i tried, it's great :) but it would b much easier if u don't have to open email

On android, there's the app called speak it reads everything that can be shared,.webpages, e-mails, sms etc. It uses the tts service of your choice. I prefer svox classic tts it uses very natural sounding voices. Give it a try.

Text voice is already built into Mac so I think I'll just settle for that...

Very cool extension! Especially when your on the go or multitasking or just don't have time to read!

Cool, things I didn't know that I would enjoy using

Thanks chrome! But how about android extensions...?

Melody thank for telling me whats hot but not interested

+Barin Banerjee It already is. I'm using Chrome on Windows 8 as we speak. If it's not working for you then for some reason it's just incompatible with your setup and you will just have to wait for the official release of Win8 for it to work properly.
