A mathematician explains shapes and numbers; and the ideas it takes to explain shapes and numbers; and also the ideas it takes to explain those ideas; and the ideas it takes to explain those ideas; and so on . . .

This is a paraphrase of what Bill Thurston described as the work a mathematician does, and I think it's a helpful one. Mathematical research occurs usually at the bottom of that stack, but also sometimes in the middle.

I was challenged recently to think about describing my work for a campus outreach program, and I wondered if I could do it in Thurston's paradigm. The picture is me trying to organize my thinking.

Sabrina Schmidt, former undergraduate mathematics major, blogs about her work experience over the last five years and suggests ways undergraduate math students can be better prepared for math-related positions in companies. Current and former undergraduate math students are invited to read her blog post and comment on their experiences with mathematics--as students or in the work place. What do you wish you had learned more about in college mathematics to show you career options and prepare you for jobs in business, industry and government?
