Slate has called BS on recipe writers' assertions that it only takes 10 minutes to caramelize onions. CHOW senior editor John Birdsall makes an appeal that people stop trying to time recipes and start using common sense.

10 minutes???!!! I often do mine in the oven on a sheet pan ... it takes at least 45 minutes to get them caramelized properly!
