EDITORIAL: State and federal laws designed to keep guns from emotionally disturbed people have loopholes. More extensive background checks can keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others. President Trump signed a law blocking the Social Security Administration from giving the names of people with relevant mental illnesses to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

EDITORIAL: Domestic violence assaults involving a gun are 12x more likely to end in death than assaults with other weapons. Illinois has a strong law to deter domestic violence, but there is no tough federal law.
GO TO: 31bullets.suntimes.com/16 to contact your U.S. representatives and ask them to cosponsor the Protect Domestic Violence and Stalking Act of 2017 (S. 1539) which would expand protections for victims.

EDITORIAL: We need to know more about the impact of gun violence. But the NRA lobbied to successfully block the Centers for Disease Control from conducting gun violence research for more than 20 years. Legislation passed in March makes it clear the CDC has the authority to study gun violence and potential solutions, but funding is woefully inadequate.
Head to 31bullets.suntimes.com/15 to sign a petition to support CDC gun violence research.

OPINION: 30 years ago, school shootings were unheard of. Then, Laurie Dann shattered the innocence of Hubbard Woods school in Winnetka. On this anniversary, one of the victims shares his compelling view on gun control:
"That day in 1988 began with poisoned food, a home fire, and by today’s standard, a cyanide weapon of mass destruction. But it was only the guns that killed. Unreasonable access and the increased capacity of firearms are breaking us."

EDITORIAL: A “trigger crank” attaches to the trigger guard of a semi-automatic rifle, increasing firepower and the likelihood of fatalities in acts of terrorism. Illinois legislation is pending that would ban trigger cranks and bump stocks.
Go to: 31bullets.suntimes.com/14 and urge your state and congressional representatives to make trigger cranks illegal.

EDITORIAL: Back then, we honestly thought this was an aberration, an anomaly, something horrifying but impossibly unusual. People don’t kill kids in schools. Now we know differently.
Our aim in our 31 bullets campaign is not a ban on most or all guns. Our aim is much more to regulate the sale and ownership of firearms to keep them out of the hands of people who pose a danger to themselves and others.

EDITORIAL: 90% of guns used in criminal acts can be traced to just 5% of gun dealers. These so called "bad apple" dealers help criminals circumvent gun laws created to keep firearms out of dangerous hands, putting communities at risk for violence. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner recently vetoed legislation that would address "bad apple" dealers by requiring state licensing of gun shops.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Urge your representatives to support an override of Rauner’s veto: http://www.ilga.gov/
Head to 31bullets.suntimes.com/13 to sign a petition to stop these "bad apple" gun dealers.

EDITORIAL: The risk of unintentional shootings and gun suicides increases when guns are not stored properly. Child access prevention laws hold gun owners accountable for the secure storage of firearms, helping to keep firearms from falling into young hands.
Tell your elected officials that safe storage laws save lives.
