During Week One, the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University examines the ethics of invention. Innovation historically has meant the development and deployment of new ideas, processes, materials, or artifacts. With the rise of global technology systems such as railroads, however, innovation became a mechanism by which our planet was soon being transformed. With the dawn of the Anthropocene – the “Age of Humans” – innovation will shift again to become a major mechanism by which both the planet, and the human, are engineered.
