Low-Melting point metals such as zinc, lead and tin are not always easy to prepare. These metals are very soft and malleable, and attaining a scratch free finish can be challenging. One of the more common problems during preparation of these specimens is embedding.

On Friday, September 14th Buehler conducted a safety awareness day. We kicked off the event with our annual evacuation drill. The Safety Day Passports encouraged participation and resulted in some in home safety prizes. Participants learned proper Personal Protective Equipment procedures, how to operate an AED and hands on fire extinguisher application. We cooled off from the heat of the day with some ice cream treats. Thanks to everyone for your active participation.

Thank you to the American Ceramic Society for publishing Doug Ngai and Constandino Relias article in the September issue of Bulletin. The article on page 34 is on 'Indentation Fracture Toughness' and discusses how Vickers indentation eliminates the need for standardized samples to determine fracture toughness of brittle materials. The key is to select the correct system of equations to calculate
fracture toughness from crack morphology. https://buff.ly/2PC1kr7
