Pipeline Plastics Expands HDPE Offerings - Literally
Texas company Pipeline Plastics LLC is quite literally expanding their plastic pipe offerings with a new 65-inch HDPE pipe. Responding to market demands, the company looks to fill the growing demand for increasing water needs in agriculture and mining. Pipeline Plastics LLC, which previously had only gone as large as 24 inches in diameter, also plans on creating pipes between 24 and 65 inches noted to be needed in markets as diverse as potable water transportation and co-produced water from energy production.
You can read all about it by following the link - http://www.plasticsnews.com/article/20170608/NEWS/170609919/texas-plant-extruding-65-inch-diameter-hdpe-pipe

Invista Relocates Manufacturing of Raptor Nylon Pipe - This article was big news when I originally posted it in February 2015. Since the spoolable composite market in North America is a fairly close-knit group, most everyone in that sector knows that Invista’s move to relocate their manufacturing of Raptor Nylon Pipe was followed quickly by their exit from the market. However, I believe the original article still stands the test of time. It was fascinating to watch the standards development process for Invista’s nylon 6,6 Raptor pipe for oil and gas production and it did provide a great window into their market focus. I continue to believe that one can understand market trends in plastic piping by observing standards activity which was the thesis of my presentation at the Polyolefins Conference Houston 2015 during a session titled Polyolefins in Durable Applications. The jurisdiction of subcommittee ASTM F17.68 makes it an excellent listening post for just such market intentions. Strain Hardening Modulus (SHM) and Natural Draw Ratio (NDR) have both been widely discussed for their capabilities to provide insights into the slow-crack growth (SCG) performance of polyethylene (PE) materials. At this point, no broad industry initiatives have arisen to formalize an ASTM International procedure for measuring either SHM or NDR. Neither has there been any plastic pipe industry initiatives to introduce either measure into either codes or standards as a replacement or equivalent to existing SCG test methods for PE. Because of the potential benefits to industry from the significant reduction in cost associated with either SHM or NDR in comparison to traditional SCG test methods, it is unfortunate. This paper will present the literature establishing the capabilities of SHM or NDR to replace traditional SCG test methods, consider the reasons industry has not yet adopted these alternative test methods, and propose a path to realization of the potential value of SHM and NDR for PE pressure piping applications. Click below for FREE access to my five page paper on the subject!

Plastic Pipe and ANTEC® 2015 Preliminary Program

I wanted to inform the plastic pipe community about the upcoming sessions and great papers focused on pipe during ANTEC® 2015.  Three sessions are of particular interest to those in the plastic piping industry;  Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning, and Wednesday morning.  On Monday afternoon, check out the M34 session titled “Investigations of Materials and Test Methods for Plastic Pipe Systems”.  On Tuesday morning, the session of interest is T12 titled “Plastics in Building and Construction”.  On Wednesday morning, you won’t want to miss the very popular W6 session which is jointly hosted by Failure Analysis and Prevention & Plastic Pipes and Fittings.  You can check for the preliminary program on the SPE website now.
