It is with great sadness that I must confirm that our friend and colleague Khalil Dale has been killed following his abduction.

Since he was taken, the Red Cross Red Crescent had been urging Khalil’s unconditional release, and we were hopeful throughout of a successful, peaceful resolution.

We have been in close contact with Khalil’s friends and family throughout, and share in their grief and outrage.

For today, however, our focus is on mourning a valued, respected and loved colleague whose record of helping people in some of the most desperate situations the world has seen over the last 30 years speaks for itself.

The world is a poorer place without Khalil, we will miss him, and our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.

It is some comfort however, knowing that his legacy – through the thousands of lives he has touched through his humanitarian work – will live on for generations.

- Sir Nick Young, chief executive, British Red Cross
