I recently spoke with Andy Last of Beyond Synth about oil barons, Beverly Hills 90210, parenting, and yes, music. In fact, Andy had some keen observations about my music that will make me think twice next time I'm in studio!

He's been playing my stuff on the show for years, and included some excellent song selections going all the way back to 1999's "For Good".

I'm a fan, patron, and regular listener of the show, so this is a big deal to me. I hope you'll take the time to listen to the episode in its entirety, but my interview starts at 1:18:00.

I’m proud to present my first instrumental release in many, many years of releasing music. It's actually an edit of a 10-minute piece that will close my upcoming album, The Majesty of Our Broken Past.

I have no idea how to describe it beyond the vintage gear I used. It’s mostly Roland Jupiter 8 with sprinkles of Yamaha DX-7, driven by an Oberheim DMX.

The 4th of July is a big day in Huntington Beach, California. It starts early with a 5K race and pancake breakfast, followed by the main event, a parade. Parades bore me to death, but I usually end up there anyway. The highlight of my countless year’s attendance was seeing Norman Fell, who played Mr. Roper on 80s sitcom Three’s Company. After the last float passes by, everyone heads to the beach. On their bikes, since the streets are still closed to traffic.

Nights downtown can get rowdy. In 1993 there was a riot a block away from our house. Until the past couple years, fireworks were prohibited, which meant everyone had the illegal ones. With M-80s going off at random intervals through the night, it’s tough to get any decent sleep.

This song is about the morning after, when spirits are low, fuses are short, and patriotism has returned to baseline levels. The streets are covered in black powder and shredded paper, and the smell of sulphur lingers in the air. Listen closely and you’ll hear fireworks burst on every fourth hit of the snare drum.

Many of you asked me about the squishy keyboard that appears in my performance videos. It's a Seaboard Block by ROLI.

It's super expressive, a lot of fun, and you don't need a recording studio or even musical ability to use it. You can make full tracks using only the NOISE app on your phone.

I partnered with ROLI to give one away this week, plus download codes to all my albums. Why not take 30 seconds to enter?
