Seventeen Bowdoin students were back in the neighborhood a week before most of their colleagues this semester to take part in an “intensive public service experience.” Alternative Winter Break is one of two annual alternative breaks — the other is in the spring. The aim of the program, ...

Students have a range of solutions to stay calm and focused during finals. Some visit the therapy dogs Bowdoin brings in during exams. Others go out for gelato with friends, work out, play rugby or watch movies.

The conference also provides an opportunity to put Bowdoin on the radar of many marine scientists. “It will shine a light on all our marine-related programs and students at the Coastal Studies Center,” Carlon noted. Over the past few years, the Center on Orr’s Island has been expanding its facilities and academic programs.
Twenty-four years ago when he was a graduate student of benthic ecology, David Carlon, director of the Bowdoin Coastal Studies Center, gave his first professional talk at the annual Benthic Ecology Meeting. This year, Carlon is organizing the meeting, which Bowdoin College will host.

Introduction
The Offer of the College
TO BE AT HOME in all lands and all ages;
To count Nature a familiar acquaintance,
And Art an intimate friend;
To gain a standard for the appreciation of others’ work
And the criticism of your own;
To carry the keys of the world’s library in your pocket,
And feel its resources behind you in whatever task you undertake;
To make hosts of friends...
Who are to be leaders in all walks of life;
To lose yourself in generous enthusiasms
And cooperate with others for common ends —
This is the offer of the college for the best four years of your life.

Adapted from the original “Offer of the College”
by William DeWitt Hyde
President of Bowdoin College 1885 - 1917
