A temporary public art installation features the formerly threatened California Condor population on view in Boise. The installations are a product of the City of Boise’s Department of Arts & History Public Art Academy, a free, eight-week course, taught by Karen Bubb, Public Art Program Manager. The course equips emerging-level artists with strategies and skills to approach and be successful in the realm of public art. Each year, the course provides enrollees with an opportunity to apply for a public art project. In 2015, the third year of the course, three artist teams were awarded projects, which are being completed in 2016. The first of the three projects completed was “22”. Designed and executed by local artist Ellen DeAngelis, “22” appears as a group of 22 California Condors roosting on the roof the Record Exchange. DeAngelis partnered with the Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey and the Record Exchange to spread awareness about the fragility of the species. “22” was dedicated March 12 and is on display until mid-April. The exhibit will then travel to various locations around the country as part of the Peregrine Fund’s efforts to educate the public about endangered birds.
