A utility’s Customer Information System (CIS) is integrated into virtually all aspects of a utility’s contact with customers. Legacy systems may have served utilities well, but challenges with maintenance and implementing new programs – such as conservation or demand response – are catching up with the aging technology and may point to a need to replace. Black & Veatch recommends a multi-step process that involves assessing the health of the current CIS; determining the feasibility of a CIS replacement; and building a business case for change. http://bit.ly/1NyUbpm

Contracting with an energy services company can be a wise way for water and wastewater utilities to implement efficiency improvements. Performance contracting is a powerful tool, but success usually happens only when both parties fully tap the specific knowledge each participant brings to the project, and apply best practices. http://bit.ly/1OnHoB4 #water #wastewater

The interest in #drone technology by electric, water and natural gas utilities is growing at a rapid pace, and this relatively new application for utilities seems positioned to eventually become a best practice as the usage is woven into more projects. However, before drone technology becomes ubiquitous, it will require revisions of current federal mandates concerning the use of unmanned aerial systems. http://bit.ly/1WaDmUf

As falling costs for distributed energy resources reduce the barriers to entry, new players like #solar and #battery storage developers are establishing relationships with utility customers. This is raising new concerns that without action, utilities will lose their cherished one-to-one customer relationship. In response, some utilities are offering utility-owned rooftop solar in direct competition. http://bit.ly/1NyTJaO

What happens when a Customer Information System implementation doesn't go as planned? What should #utilities do to quickly restore customer service levels and data quality? This case study provides a real industry example of challenges poorly implemented #CIS create and the benefits gained from a CIS rescue as demonstrated by the City of Cleveland’s Division of Water (CWD) Customer Service Turnaround Program. http://bit.ly/1OlCdl9

The Environmental Protection Agency's accidental release of 3 million gallons of acid mine drainage wastewater from the Gold King mine into the Animas and San Juan Rivers of Colorado last August highlighted the damage that acid mine drainage can reap on the environment. An innovative approach, which offers great possibilities for reducing the potential water quality impacts from mine wastewater is the use of treatment wetlands, or wetlands created specifically to treat acid mine drainage and other #wastewater. Learn more on these possibilities: http://bit.ly/240uy8p
