Checking Your Open Fire

Whilst you will need us to check the integrity of your flue there is a very simple safety issue you can check yourself if you have an open fire; the 'backfilling'

When an open fire is installed it is usually fitted into a square or oblong builders hole. In Bristol many are victorian cast iron inset fires usually with a half moon flap used as a draft preventer when not in use. Additionally fires with a type of clay shaped back brick are also common. Either way, when fitted into the builders opening the gap behind the fire must be filled, not with rubble, but with a proper heatproof mix which then has a shaped top flaunced in.

This mix will allow the fire to flex without warping and prevents material falling into the void which creates a high risk of fire.

Simply remove the half moon draft flap or the fireplace hinged hood and check the fire doesn't have a void. If it does do not use it any further but give us a ring so we can visit and sort the problem out. This is a fairly simple repair but could prevent a serious fire. We can also replace and repair back bricks for fires, especially the really old ones that are impossible to source these days.

Below is a nice looking fireplace, remove the hood and you can see the void behind the fireback.

Very overdue but our website has had an overhaul with help from Gary Avery (Averys Chimney Sweeps). Gary is a well respected Bristol sweep who is also a whizz on all things I.T.

Unfortunately we have slipped in the SEO rankings but, with the majority of our work being repeat custom and word of mouth referrals business remains busy.

Do check out the site https://bestsweep.co.uk and provide any feedback so we can continue to improve the information given and the service we provide. All views gratefully received.

November winner of a full stove refurbishment; rope seals, fire cement, glass clean and re-blacking service. This one has come up like new despite having had real heavy use over a number of years.

Remember, if you have a stove with a flexi liner installed get into a Spring cycle of sweeping to maximise the life of the liner.

Flexi liner fitted to a stove after just 2 years use. Failing to get it swept, burning the wrong fuel combination and burning the stove incorrectly has led to this expensive problem.

For the sake of the price of a sweep just call your local professional chimney sweep and get your stove assessed for safe use.

Now look, I don't mind considered advise or assistance at all. I welcome customers who have a view and wish to improve our service, that's how we develop.

I can however, shock horror, recognise a fireplace, call it a lucky guess but I did have this spot already in mind.

A chimney fire generates enough heat to damage the fabric of a building. They generally occur through burning unseasoned wood that coats the flue with flammable tar/creosote or a lack of sweeping leads to similar build ups which eventually catch fire. To add insult to injury the fire service will pump water down the chimney.

You don't need this so book a professional chimney.
