Just in time for the bank holiday, we name six of the best seaside festivals: http://www.classical-music.com/blog/six-best-seaside-festivals #seaside #music #swimming #surfing
Yes, it is possible to combine world-class classical music with some serious sea-swimming, and even surfing. Here are six of the best, but there are plenty of bracing opportunities for the hardier wild-swimmer at festivals in Aberystwyth, St Magnus, Deal, Cape Cod, and the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm.

If you would like to discover more of the music of Lennox Berkeley, have a listen to a clip from our Chamber Choice: http://www.classical-music.com/monthly-choice/l-berkeley
‘There’s great fun in the 1971Introduction and Allegro for double bass and piano, boasting the occasional burst of jazz, while the tiny, elegiac In Memoriam for Stravinsky of the same year is a marvel of economy and grace.

Cinquecento sings Lassus in this month's Choral & Song choice, on @hyperionrecords. Have a listen here: http://www.classical-music.com/monthly-choice/lassus
‘With just one voice to a part, polyphonic lines are sharply etched and perfectly weighted throughout; rhythms are buoyant and full of momentum.

Vasily Petrenko is to record all of Scriabin’s symphonies with the Oslo Philharmonic. The Russian conductor, who has been chief conductor of the Norwegian orchestra since the 2013-14 season, has paired Symphony No. 3 and the Poem of Ecstasy (Symphony No. 4) for the first disc in the project.

Mahler's demons unleashed: Andris Nelsons conducts the @LucerneFestival Orchestra: http://www.classical-music.com/blog/lucerne-festival-orchestra-andris-nelsons #review
This is the second season that the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been without its founding father and guiding spirit, Claudio Abbado. And for a second year, Andris Nelsons has taken up the baton and, presumably, taken on the burden of expectation and the joy of working with such wonderful musicians.

There's a premiere of a Messiaen orchestration at the Proms tonight. And Christopher Dingle has told us all about it: http://www.classical-music.com/blog/messiaen-world-premiere
The first review I wrote for BBC Music Magazine was of the premiere recording of Messiaen’s last completed orchestral work, Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà… (Illuminations [lit. lightening flashes] of the Beyond]. That was 21 years ago, just two years after the composer’s death in 1992.

Krystian Zimerman returns to the piano concerto composed for him by Lutoslawski. You can hear it here: http://www.classical-music.com/monthly-choice/lutoslawski
‘Rattle’s own input is distinguished; well-known for his affinity with Szymanowski’s music, he conducts this with a similar ecstatic beauty, suggesting a plausible if unexpected kinship between these two great Polish masters from opposite ends of the 20th century.' John Allison   Lutosławski Piano Concerto; Symphony No.
