Simply device. This is not an easy place to get to, set in the wilds of Connemara but if you make the effort, the reward is great. On arrival the facade, entrance door and even reception appear underwhelming but that is simply the beauty of the place. Someone has put a lot of thought and time in to this building. Rarely have I come across decor in a public building to match this quality. It doesn't jump out at you, it simply feels just right. Our deluxe room was up there with the benchmark for Irish hotel accommodation, Harveys Point. Although not as big, there was ample space and again that feeling of quality throughout. Then there are the views of the river and the woods, just enchanting. So stop reading this review and book a break now!

In a word, beautiful.. I only wish I had postponed my trip for another month so I could be there for the running of the salmon. The hotel has fly rods on hand for anyone interested in trying their luck. The river was crystal clear. I can only imagine how wonderful an experience it is to fish there.

More of an "Abbey" and less of a "Castle", this place was incredible. Gorgeous grounds, beautiful facilities, and some of the best food I've ever eaten in my whole life. Couldn't recommend staying here enough.

This review is of bar/restaurant, not of accommodation. Pretentious much..??? Decided to call in for some food as was in the local area as apparently this place is recommended. Have never felt so unwelcome from a place in all my life. As we entered we immediately felt that the waitress was ignoring us for the older couples in the bar. We were well dressed, so it wasn't because the way we were dressed. After over ten minutes of waiting at the bar to get served, we finally got the attention of the waitress (after an elderly gentleman let her know we were looking to get served). Without greeting us she immediately enquired "Are you staying with us". With our reply of no, we received a look that was like you are a third class citizen as she then turned and grunted something. Eventually the food came, it was very average. And so enter the waitress for her final performance. She walked around to each table (who were guests) enquiring if their food was satisfactory and associated pretend fraternising. One look at our table and she then continues on to the next table ignoring us. It was just comical for us at this stage. If you do not want non guests/walk ins attending the castle, then make this clear. Put a sign up. Pathetic customer service by this waitress which is obviously a reflection or quite possibly a direction from management. Did not stay as guest and wouldn't.

A fantastic castle to visit! Very old look and items on the walls, etc. But very modern when it comes to the rooms and bathrooms. Beautiful views from the bedrooms.

Lovely large rooms along the river. More of a hunting lodge than a castle but still very lovely. The bartenders were very accommodating and made great drinks! We would definitely go back but not as part of a castle trip. There did have excellent walking trails around the grounds.

Interview in today's Sunday Times with our head chef Ultan Cooke, a great read, where he discusses his use of local ingredients where "what grows together, goes together"
