Hi there, regarding your comment on my blog, here is the reply if you are unable to read it on my blog:
First of all, it would be easier for me to answer if you let me know your laptop model. However here is my answer ro your question:
1. I'm pretty sure Windows Updates will not install all drivers for Windows 7 especially your graphic.
2. Yes, you MUST have a backup for XP drivers.
3. There are few old graphics (which released before Windows Vista) that physically does not support aero. However it is not a problem, you can install True Transparency software to get the aero feature.
4. Is it Aero is an important feature?
No, it is not, it just give your windows the transparency and glass look. It is just a display feature. You can easily install Windows 7 without worrying about the aero feature.
So, to sum up, it is easy to install Windows 7 on old laptop even the graphic does not support Aero. After Windows 7 installation, Windows automatic updates will install most of the drivers, but not all. So, you must start find the missing drivers manually. Normally, what I did was modified the original drivers or manual installation using Windows XP drivers.
If you already installed windows 7 and need the drivers, do let me know =)
