LANDROVER CREATES INVISIBLE BONNET WITH AUGMENTED REALITY

'Transparent Bonnet' is a new technology being showcased by +Land Rover which makes the front of the car "virtually" invisible from inside the cabin.

The technology uses cameras in the vehicle's grill and  #augmentedreality  to show the driver obstacles underneath and in front of the car, below their usual line of vision.

The driver can also see the position of the front wheels which could be useful when manoeuvring in tight spaces.

Could we see this system in more models in the future? It could even be handy on the shopping run for avoiding bollards in Tesco's car park!
Land Rover's latest technology allows drivers to see through the bonnet to spot invisible hazards thanks to augmented reality

IS THIS THE BOOST THE ELECTRIC CAR NEEDS?

One of the big obstacles that electric vehicles (#EVs) face is the length of time it takes to charge their batteries.

Well, imagine if you could recharge your #car as you drove along, with the road providing the charging power. Then your EV would get by with smaller lighter batteries which would be cheaper too  - potentially making electric vehicles less expensive to buy.

The article below from +Car and Driver Magazine gives more detail.

20,000 MILES A YEAR - LESS EMISSIONS THAN ONE COW

The #Elio  is a new lightweight vehicle aimed at commuters that is cheap to run and economical too.

According to Paul Elio of Elio Motors, "If you drive it 20,000 miles per year, an Elio produces less emissions than one cow’s flatulence during the same time".

This modern-day take on the #Morgan three-wheeler is kitted out like a car but classified (in the USA at least) as a motorcycle.

Its maker plans to offer it with an innovative financing package - buyers will be offered the option to buy the car with nothing but a special credit card for fuel; every time someone buys fuel, they’ll pay extra to make a car payment.

What do you think of the car and the method of paying it and would this approach work in the UK?
The Elio is technically a motorcycle, but is a whole lot easier and safer to drive.

HOW TO  CRASH-TEST A CAR

Car - check, dummy driver - check, large immovable object to crash into - check. But is that all you need?

Crash-testing a #car involves much more than sticking a dummy human behind the steering wheel, as this fascinating video from America's +IIHS shows.

For one thing, you need to ensure that everything  is recorded in a consistent way so you can compare results. Even factors such as the placement of cameras is precisely determined so that they are in the exact same spot from vehicle to vehicle.

Fuel is replaced with a purple fluid so it can be seen if it leaks out as a result of the #crash. The car is weighed and its weight is used in equations to determine the correct speed for the #crashtest.

Have a look and we can guarantee you'll learn a thing or two!

THE 200 MPG 3D-PRINTED CAR

The #Urbee is a Canadian designed and built experimental car that aims to be the greenest possible.

It uses electrical energy stored in batteries to power electric motors and chemical energy from ethanol to power the internal combustion engine. It can do more than 200 miles per gallon.

The light and strong #bodywork   of the car was manufactured using #3dprinting . Furthur models will have much of the interior printed via  the 3D method too - except for the chassis and engine.

If 3D printing of car bodywork ever becomes standard then it's not impossible that in future you could see technicians from +AutoRestore® 3D-printing replacement body parts on your driveway.

CAR COMPANIES DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THE DIGITAL WORLD

In-car #technology should be for consumers to extend their digital lifestyle into their vehicle but car companies are not understanding this digital world very well.

Part of the reason is to do with the development cycle of #cars; those hitting the market today were developed three to five years ago. The #digital world moves far faster than that.

In addition, according to Mark Scalf of GM, "you can't just take a mobile app experience and cut and copy that exact experience into the automotive context."  In-car tech is far more complicated as the article below goes on to explain...
As Apple enters the fray with CarPlay, the automotive industry continues its struggle with connected technology inside the cabin.

IS THE CONNECTED CAR BLACKBERRY'S BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY?

The #connectedcar market could be worth $53 billion  in 2018 but +BlackBerry has a fight on its hands if it is to continue expanding further into this market.

Although BlackBerry's #QNX based systems are the system of choice for manufacturers such as +Ford Motor Company , it faces a serious challenge from Google's #Android.

The company does have one significant advantage over +Google and Apple; QNX's proven track record in running safety systems, where an issue with software could mean the difference between life and death,

Which system would you rather have in your connected car -  QNX, Android or Apple's #CarPlay system?
Though BlackBerry owns a sliver of the smartphone market they once dominated, its QNX-based connected-car systems may be the best weapon they have in maintaining its lead over the companies that drove the Canadian company nearly out of the smartphone business. Bloomberg reports QNX -- the choice for connected-car
