The Meeting, the Aspen Skiing Company's annual get-stoked-for-ski-season event begins tomorrow, October 3 and runs through Saturday. Included during the three-day event, are discussions on content creation, marketing, social media, data analysis and technology. It's a great way to network and meet other industry professionals, while getting inspired for ski season. Plus, The Meeting will include The Meeting Film Festival - three nights of films screened at the Wheeler Opera House.

At the end of September, those of us who love movies gather at the Wheeler Opera House for the week of heaven that is Aspen Filmfest. That heavenly event starts tomorrow, September 25 and runs until September 30. Now in its 39th presentation, Filmfest offers attendees the opportunity to see films that haven't been released to the public, and the slate of films covers multiple genres from documentary to drama, romance and intrigue. If you haven't attended Filmfest and you're in town, don't miss it. Tickets are at Aspenshowtix.

Runners from across the US will again participate in Saturday's Golden Leaf Half Marathon. Frequently chosen by Trail Runner Magazine as one of “America’s 14 Most Scenic Races,” the Golden Leaf is one of the most beautiful foot races in the Rockies. The challenging course traverses the mountains of Snowmass and Aspen at vertiginous heights, with trails that can be narrow and steep at times with elevation gains of 970 feet peaking at 9,400 feet in elevation. We're at peak leaf color this weekend, so it should be breathtaking to watch the race!

"Gort, klaatu barrada nikto!" If that phrase sounds vaguely familiar, tonight's screening at the Aspen Art Museum will resonate. The AAM is screening the sci-fi 1950s classic, The Day The Earth Stood Still, at 7pm. The showing is part of the Movies at The Museum film program curated by local cinephile Jon Bush. If you've never seen this movie, the tale of peaceful aliens with good intentions will ring surprisingly current. Don't miss it!

In mid-September, we always look forward to the return of Aspen Ruggerfest, and all of the attendant fun of watching burly athletes in no-holds barred rough and tumble contests - and that includes women as well as men! Ruggerfest is the world's only all-age, full-contact rugby tournament, and teams come from all over the world to compete. Champion rugby is on display for the entire weekend, rain, snow, or shine. The weekend forecast is for warm and sunny conditions - perfect for watching these stout athletes compete. Come and cheer on our home team, the Gentlemen of Aspen!

With all of the attention given to Aspen's annual Food & Wine Magazine Classic, one might think that wine festivals in our area are restricted to summer. Not so! This weekend the Snowmass Wine Festival takes place on Saturday, September 15 from 1:30 to 5pm on the Snowmass Town Park. A grand tasting will offer a wide variety of the world's top wines, plus delicious food from some of our valley's favorite restaurants. Live music by DJ Boogie Down Light & Sound will provide the groove, while you check out the options at the silent auction. All funds raised will be distributed to non-profit organizations in the Roaring Fork Valley, as well as providing Basalt HS senior scholarships and offering support to charitable organizations world-wide.

There aren't many things that are as magical as seeing a hot-air balloon soaring through our sunny Rocky Mountain skies. Over the three days of the Snowmass Balloon Festival, from September 7-9, 30 pilots will compete in challenges and races, as spectators take in the sights, capture memorable photos and take part in special activities and events during the weekend. Don't miss the Saturday evening Glow Show in Snowmass Base Village that features a balloon glow and a free concert.

One of the joys of summer in Aspen is the packed arts calendar. This weekend some of our favorite arts institutions will present their final programs, including Theatre Aspen (the final show is Saturday, August 18) and the Aspen Music Festival and School (Sunday, August 19 at 4pm). Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's final shows were last weekend, with terrific performances, by pianist Joyce Yang and the ASFB dancers, in three great ballets. If you've been postponing your trip to the Music Tent or the Theatre Aspen Tent in Rio Grande Park, get on over there asap, or you'll have to wait until next summer!

If you live somewhere that has a lot of ambient light (think big city or suburb), you are probably astonished at the night sky when visiting Aspen. If you love stargazing and don't have many opportunities, tonight is the night for you - it's Stars above Aspen Community Astronomy Night. This is the third annual astronomy night, presented in collaboration with the Aspen Skiing Company and the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, and runs from 6pm-10:30pm. The keynote speaker will be David Aguilar who will present "Fantastic Nights of the Planets" at 8:15pm. Activities throughout the evening include a Starlab planetarium tent, guided telescope station, sunset yoga, constellation lore, physics experiments and more. Tickets for the event are available at the lift ticket office at Aspen Mountain.
