The Cumbria Tourism Awards 2014 took place the other night and we were shortlisted for the Sustainable Tourism Award.

Although we didn't win we got a “Highly Commended” certificate, recognising all the steps we have taken to reduce our carbon footprint. Most recently we have reduced the amount of waste going to landfill by 75% and have started recycling or composting most kitchen waste which has been a great success. Providing our guests with a variety of activities locally without the need for a car has been very beneficial, and the active promotion of our electric bike rental has been an ideal way for our guests to experience the Eden valley.

End of an era...

We said goodbye yesterday to our Breakfast Manager Mike Hewitt who is retiring after several years. Mike has been a real favourite with staff and guests alike and he will be sorely missed both for his professionalism and his sense of humour. As one of our staff members put in his card “Mike, it’s been emotional”

Mike, Angela and all the management and staff wish him all the best of luck and we hope he enjoys his retirement. We are really going to miss him.

He is pictured with Mike and Angela Dunbobbin, owners of the Hotel and with some of his breakfast staff. http://ow.ly/i/5UqAR

Great news, we have been shortlisted for Cumbria Tourism's Sustainable Tourism Award!

The Hotel has been recognised before for the efforts it is making in sustainability from installing a Bio Mass Boiler to drilling our own Borehole which now supplies all the water for the Hotel.

In our continued efforts, the Hotel has recently installed Volt meters which control the flow of electricity into the hotel and have also fitted a charging point for electric cars

Mike and Angela have said “We are delighted to have been nominated for this award and to achieve recognition locally for the work we have done to reduce our carbon footprint”

Ted is back from New York and he had a wonderful time. He saw all the sites including the Statue of Liberty and the Charging Bull. He stayed at the iconic Waldorf Astoria where he took a suite of rooms. He’s off to Paris next, pictures to follow. http://ow.ly/i/5zsmX http://ow.ly/i/5zsno http://ow.ly/i/5zsny

Ted’s Big Adventure – Mexico

So that’s Ted back from Mexico and what a time he had. He really enjoyed the Mayan city at Chichen Itza and went on a Jungle safari in a Dune Buggy. He also tried some traditional dancing and by that time he felt that he needed some time by the pool. He has come back for a rest although he is soon off to Blackpool, Edinburgh and then Malta.

Ted’s Big Adventure Continues:

Ted is back from Paris and what a time he had. He visited all the sights, his favourite was the Eiffel Tower, although he did enjoy the French beer and wine. He thinks he might have to start the 5:2 diet before his trip to Mexico.

The hotel is beautiful, warm welcoming and the staff are very friendly... But it's overpriced, our room was out of date, and it has a feel of nursing home about it. (I'm guessing to keep out the riff raff) there is very little to to do once you are board of swimming and playing pool, don't get my wrong... It is a very nice place to be, I just felt it was a bit on the posh side, for old people with money to burn. There's nothing exciting happening in the local village, and eating is pricey in the hotel. No shops or attractions nearby, must drive for at least 30 mins to see any Won't be coming back. Can't say it's suitable for young people or kids. Very suited for the older generation that want to relax in a quiet place.

Absolutely wonderful three day stay at this beautiful hotel. We were treated like members of a very happy family. Not one member of staff passed us without a greeting or smile. We were upgraded to the best room in the hotel - The Heelis Suite - the most comfortable, luxurious room we have ever stayed in. Jacuzzi spa bath with built-in TV was gorgeous. This room also included our own private staircase to the swimming pool area. The two sofas at the end of the huge bed also made us feel very much at home. Food was 'to die for' and included local seasonal produce. Fine dining at its best. We will definitely be back here - probably with more family and friends. Anyone who wishes to be treated like royalty - don't look anywhere else. Great base for walks in and around the countryside.
