Bouncing off of Lionel's question, the answer to yours depends on how much the underpinnings of Android Auto have in common with Android Wear and exactly what's happening on a software level in the car's dashboard. If the car is just accepting touch inputs and displaying a video feed from the handset, then getting Auto running on a tablet that you stick in your dashboard may not be too tough. But if Auto is more like Wear, then things could get trickier.
I've liked pretty much everything else about my first two Android Wear watches. You'd think that if this first generation of AW devices are all going to use these proprietary chargers, they would make it easy to buy extras/replacements.
However, even the lowest brightness setting is too much when it pops awake in a dark movie theater. (Protip. Always-on screen: OFF, and then swipe down to MUTE before the lights go down.)
