lovely art! children's book illustrations by Emily Hughes.
“It was a flower. It was alive and wonderful. It gave the gardener hope and it made him work even harder.” – From The Little Gardener (Click to see spread in its entirety). From Wild (Click to enlarge). Last week, I talked to author-illustrator Emily Hughes over at Kirkus, so today I'm sharing ...

Interesting & fun observations on language at home / in the family / how we make sense of what we hear when we get no translation. :)
The music of my childhood was a language filled with endearments and rebukes, and frequent misunderstandings

Those of you who know me already know I don't shop at @walmart. And I won't go into another rant of why, -- the TL;DR of it is that we as consumers are responsible for our choices, and there's no such thing as something for virtually nothing. If something's incredibly cheap, we shouldn't think of "more bang for our bucks" but wonder how the heck that's possible. Walmart abuses its power, and we give it some of that power every time we go in there and give them money. Very, very few of us are too poor to shop anywhere else. Love your neighbor, guys (gals). Kindness and all that. Peace out.
Will Walmart, the world's largest retailer, follow through on its promises to make it's supply chain greener and better for workers?

thoughts on writing in a language that is not your first --
Berit Ellingsen is a Korean-Norwegian writer who writes in English.  We asked her how multiculturalism affects her writing. [caption id=attachment_10526 align=alignleft width=200] Berit's Novel The Empty City[/caption] Multiculturalism affects me first and foremost in that I write in a language that is not the first language of the country I live in. It's the language most people here learn as a second language, yet which we hear every day ...

Timely, despite the fact that it was written 70 years ago.

Ein recht intelligenter Artikel über Identität und Motivation (auch wenn am Anfang die Wortwahl re: Transgender etwas unbeholfen ist).
