Bit-oriented I/O in C++ (using templates). When writing data-compression software, you often emit blobs of 9, 10, 11 bits, etc. Marshalling these correctly so that they can be writtne (and later read back) as bytes is not quite as easy as it appears.

My take on the problems with error handling in mordern languages. Basically, we need better options than exceptions and return codes.

Andrew, I added a link above to a free book chapter on the CL condition system. You may find it interesting.
Some of the implementation details are a little clunky, but the overall concept seems promising, probably as the low-level basis for a second order system.

From our sister, site: Reverse-engineering legacy ANSI C. Start with the data, document the external-facing APIs, etc. Short, clear article:

Thanks. Yeah, it was interesting to hear him speak about the evolution of his thinking on OO.

We've just posted one of the first articles about programming the Intel Xeon Phi -- the 60-core monster they're shipping in January. http://www.drdobbs.com/parallel/programming-intels-xeon-phi-a-jumpstart/240144160

Getting the lay of the land writing your first Windows 8 apps: http://www.drdobbs.com/windows/writing-your-first-windows-8-app-the-lay/240143752?token=d15bea9a1d119ad6e56f96d70c3864c8 As expected, it's a descent into an entirely different world. We're running a 3-part series in three successive weeks on Dr. Dobb's to give devs a chance to figure out how it all fits together.

I am just blown away by how JetBrains continues to find new, useful features to add to IntelliJ IDEA, which has been my primary Java IDE for nearly 10 years. http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/nextversion/

This company specializes in Robo Calls in the Bay Area. Not sales calls, but the true, automated Robo calls which just start blaring at you the moment you answer the phone.

I believe the company went out of business in early 2013. I was given a Xmas gift of four monthly shipment of cookies. The shipment from late December arrived, but none since then. I've called the company several times since to get the rest of the cookies that were kindly paid for. No one *ever* answers the phone and no one returns phone messages. About a half a dozen emails resulted in a single email weeks ago saying my cookies would be sent out right away. No cookies ever showed up and future attempts to get the cookies have been unproductive. So, I'm pretty sure they're out of business.
